Minister charges new Takoradi Technical University (TTU) Council to Stay WITHIN their Mandate

The Minister of Education, Hon. Dr.  Mathew Opoku Prempeh has charged the new Takoradi Technical University Council to ensure that the University stays within its mandate of producing highly skilled manpower for the industrial needs of the country.

According to him, the Technical University Act, Act 922 explicitly requires the Technical Universities (TU) to provide higher education in the field of Engineering, Sciences, Applied Arts, Technology Based Disciplines, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and related disciplines.

The Minister reiterated that the government’s vision for the Technical Universities is for them to stick to their core mandate and not veer off. In this direction the NCTE and NAB were accordingly charged to intensify their monitoring responsibility in order to uphold this avowed goal.

“Government’s desire is to also provide a clear pathway for the academic and professional progression for students in the skilled based technical and vocational education in order to quip the students with high technical skills required to drive the country’s socio-economic development”, he stated.

He charged the council to maintain the focus of the Technical University in developing manpower that would be capable of thinking outside the box, be innovative and dynamic to ensure that the country achieves its development agenda of becoming the economic hub in the sub-Saharan region.

The Minister of Education, in congratulating the new council members also indicated that their selection was as a result of their technical competencies in harnessing and promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training towards skills development at all levels of the educational system to support national development.

The Minister expressed confidence in the councillors as competent academicians and industrialists to oversee the full evolution of the converted polytechnic to a fully fledged university.

The Takoradi Technical University Council is chaired by Dr. Mrs. Henrietta Abane from the University of Cape Coast, with Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, the Vice Chancellor, Hon. Ato Panford, Mr. Michael Appiah and Ing. Dr. Robert Adjaye as government nominees and members of the council.

Others include Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah from National Council for Tertiary Education, Mr. Sampson Damptey Tettey, representing COTVET, Mr. Daniel Sekyi Kwarkyi, the Association of Ghana Industries Representative, Mr. Joseph Akwasi Bawuah, representing Ghana Employers Association, Mr. Francis Rexford Sam, CHASS Representative and Mr. Joseph Abaiku Apprey,  APTI Representative.

The rest are Mr. Peter Awini Seidu, TUTAG Representative, Mr. Mark Kofi Aremu, Convocation Non-Teaching Representative, Mr. Eric Bruce Amatey Jnr.,    Convocation Teaching Representative, Mr. Ernest Nkrumah Taylor, Alumni Representative, Mr. Charles Andoh-Appiah, PAAG Representative, Mr. Eric Boafo Dadzie, POWAG Representative, Mr. James Avevor, Student’s Representative Council (SRC), and Mrs. Sylvia Beatrice Oppong-Mensah, Registrar/Secretary.
