About Komenda College of Education

Komenda College of Education was established out of the buildings (barracks) left by the Fleet Air Arm of the British Navy after the Second World War. Though the efforts of Mr. A. B. Sam, the then regent of Komenda, the legacy was leased to the Methodist Church Ghana, in 1947 to be used as a training college. The government of Ghana made some renovation works on the buildings to make it suitable for educational use.
On 11th March, 1948, the first batch of students numbering forty men were enrolled to starts an initial 2-Year Teacher’s Cert. ‘B’ programme. In 1952, the college became a co-educational institution with its first batch of thirty women.
The first Principal of the college was Mr. Lawrence Alfred Creedy, a British citizen. The motto of the college is “Bepowso Kurow Hyeren”, meaning a city set on a hill, shines forth. MHB 577 is the college hymn.

The three Strands adopted by the Founding Fathers were:
1. Academic excellence
2. Service to God
3. Service to Mankind

Among the pioneer tutors were Messrs R. C. Mensah, C. K. Penrose, Wonderful Dadson, K. A. Essuman and J. C. O. Okyere.
The College has gone through the following academic programmes:

3. 2 – Year Cert “A” (Post – Sec)
4. 3 – Year Specialist (Music & Art)
5. 2 – Year Modular Course
6. 3 – Year Cert “A” (Post – Sec)
7. 4 – Year (Untrained Diploma in Basic Education)
8. 3 – Year Diploma in Basic Education

Komenda College of Education saw a major infrastructural development in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Currently, some development projects funded by the GetFUND are ongoing as a result of the tertiary status of the college. Plans are far advanced to move the administration and classrooms from the top of the hill to the new settlement down the hill.
Achievements

Komenda College of Education has chalked a lot of successes on the academic as well as the social field as enshrined in the three main strands of the founding fathers: Academic Excellence, Service to God and Service to Mankind. Academically, the college has played her part which has enabled her to be recognized among the best of the colleges of education. This is testified in the results of the examinations conducted by the Institute of Education, University of Cape Coast. Her performance has always been one of the best.
In 1990, the college was given an award by the professional Board of the University of Cape Coast for consistent performance in examinations for five years beginning from 1985 – 1990. The college placed an overall 3rd position out of the 38 public training colleges in Ghana in the first semester examination of the 2007/2008 academic year.
A number of Methodist Ministers are old students of Komenda College. Notable among them being Rt. Rev. Dr. Asante-Antwi, the immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, the Rt. Rev. Isaac K. Quansah, the outgoing Bishop of the Cape Coast Diocese, Methodist Church, who is also the Board Chairman.
Another remarkable achievement is that some past students of Komenda College (KOSA) are lecturers in Ghanaian Universities. Examples are Prof. Ansu-Kyeremeh, Dr. Essuman Johnson and Mr. Joshua Alfred Amuah all of the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. J. K. Aboagye, Dr. Dora Edu-Boando, Mr. Philip Amuah, Mr. Gabriel Essilfie, Mr. Karl Max Ghansah and Mr. Alexander Hope of University of Cape Coast, Very Rev. Samuel Kodwo Enninful of KNUST and Dr. Joseph Osapah Mankoe of the University College of Education, Winneba.
Mentioncould also be made of Capt. Samuel Saltson of the Military and A. S. P. Kwesi Asare of the Ghana Police Service.
KOSA members are being called upon to help put the college where it belongs to.

Komenda College of Education Admissions

Application Forms are ready for sale in February to May each year at the College and other Colleges of Education.

Applicants Applicants will first make a payment in the name of COLLEGES OF EDUCATION – GHANA through SMARTPAY INTO THE COLLEGES OF EDUCATION-GHANA account NUMBER at any branch of the GHANA COMMERCIAL BANK where they will be issued a unique PIN (PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER) with a serial number.
With this PIN, applicants will then visit: the admission website and follow specific guidelines to fill in the online application form.
Applicants are to note that application forms that are not properly completed will not be processed.

NOTE: On completing the application form online, an applicant will need to print a copy which should be mailed to The Principal of the College chosen with one passport photograph and a copy of the applicant’s result slip(s).

Applicants will be notified of the receipt of their applications by SMS.For the admission proper, applicants will receive notifications by SMS and those who do not receive any such notifications should understand it to mean that they have not been selected for admission.

Entry requirements

The MINIMUM requirement for admission to the Three-year Basic Education Programme in a College of Education for WASSCE or SSSCE applicants is CREDIT PASSES IN FIVE (5) SUBJECTS MADE UP OF THREE CORE AND TWO ELECTIVE SUBJECTS THREE OF THE FIVE SUBJECTS MUST BE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, MATHEMATICS, INTEGRATED SCIENCE OR SOCIAL STUDIES.

For purposes of admission, a credit pass in: (a) WASSCE MEANS GRADES A1- C6 (b) SSCE MEANS GRADES A-D

2. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR VARIOUS PROGRAMME OPTIONS The specific requirements for admission to the various Programme options are as follows:

GENERAL
WASSCE/SSCE CREDIT PASSES IN FIVE SUBJECTS COMPRISING ENGLISH LANGUAGE, CORE MATHEMATICS, INTEGRATED SCIENCE OR SOCIAL STUDIES AND TWO ELECTIVE SUBJECTS.

MATHEMATICS/SCIENCE
WASSCE/SSCE CREDIT PASSES IN FIVE SUBJECTS COMPRISING ENGLISH LANGUAGE, CORE MATHEMATICS, INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND TWO ELECTIVE SUBJECTS IN THE AREA OF MATHEMATICS AND OR SCIENCE

FRENCH
WASSCE/SSCE CREDIT PASSES IN FIVE SUBJECTS COMPRISING ENGLISH LANGUAGE, CORE MATHEMATICS, INTEGRATED SCIENCE OR SOCIAL STUDIES AND TWO ELECTIVE SUBJECTS INCLUDING FRENCH.

TECHNICAL
WASSCW/SSCE PASSES IN FIVE SUBJECTS COMPRISING ENGLISH LANGUAGE, CORE MATHEMATICS, INTEGRATED SCIENCE OR SOCIAL STUDIES AND TWO RELEVANT ELECTIVE SUBJECTS.

NOTE

Prospective applicants should wait to get all their results before applying because only results provided at the time of submitting applications will be used in selecting students.
