What Is Diesel?

Diesel Fuel, also called diesel oil, is any liquid fuel specifically designed for use in a diesel engine, a type of internal combustion engine in which fuel ignition takes place without a spark as a result of compression of the inlet air and then injection of fuel.

What Is Diesel Made Of?

Diesel fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons with boiling points in the range of 150 to 380°C which are obtained from petroleum. Petroleum crude oils are composed of hydrocarbons of three major classes: (1) paraffinic, (2) naphthenic (or cycloparaffinic), and (3) aromatic hydrocarbons.

Is Diesel Same As Fuel?

Gasoline Fuel and Diesel Fuel

While both gasoline and diesel start as crude oil mined from the earth, the refining process then separates them into various types of fuels. Diesel fuel is thicker than gasoline, which means it evaporates slower. Diesel fuel also has more energy density.

Is Diesel More Powerful Than Petrol?

In pure scientific terms, diesel fuel has more energy by volume than petrol (36.9 megajoules per litre vs 33.7 megajoules per litre). By its nature, petrol is a lighter fuel that evaporates into the air more readily than diesel, while diesel is a denser fuel that is not easily ignited.

What Is Diesel Fuel Used For?

Diesel Fuel Is Used or Many Tasks

Diesel engines in trucks, trains, boats, and barges help transport nearly all products people consume.

How Do You Make Diesel?

It is produced from the fractional distillation of crude oil between 200 and 350 °C (392 and 662 °F) at atmospheric pressure, resulting in a mixture of carbon chains that typically contain between 9 and 25 carbon atoms per molecule.

What Are The Types Of Diesel?

Diesel fuel is produced from various sources, the most common being petroleum. Other sources include biomass, animal fat, biogas, natural gas, and coal liquefaction.

For instance, there are two types of standard diesel fuel: Diesel #1 (or 1-D) and Diesel #2 (or 2-D). Then there is biodiesel which is mainly made of agricultural materials.

  • Petroleum Diesel
  • Synthetic Diesel
  • Biodiesel

What Type Of Diesel Should I Use?

You won’t have to worry about which type to use because all diesel automakers specify Diesel #2 for normal driving conditions. Truckers use Diesel #2 to carry heavy loads for long distances at sustained speeds because it’s less volatile than Diesel #1 and provides greater fuel economy.

Why Is Diesel More Powerful?

Because diesel has a higher compression resistance because it is denser than light distillate fuels engineers can design and develop diesel engines with higher compression ratios than gasoline engines. The higher the compression ratio of an engine, the greater the thermal efficiency.

How Long Do Diesel Engines Last?

1,000,000-1,500,000 miles

But an amazing fact is that diesel engines can run for 1,000,000-1,500,000 miles before needing any major diesel repairs. If kept well-maintained, a diesel engine can be driven for about 30 years or more.

Advantages Of Diesel fuel Engines:

The diesel engine is much more efficient and preferable as compared with gasoline engine due to the following reasons:

  • Modern diesel engines have overcome disadvantages of earlier models of higher noise and maintenance costs.  They are now quiet and require less maintenance as compared with gas engines of similar size
  • They are more rugged and reliable
  • There is no sparking as the fuel auto-ignites. The absence of spark-plugs or spark wires lowers maintenance costs
  • Fuel cost per Kilowatt produced is thirty to fifty percent lower than that of gas engines
  • An 1800 rpm water cooled diesel unit operates for 12,000 to 30,000 hours before any major maintenance is necessary. An 1800 rpm water cooled gas unit usually operates for 6000-10,000 hours before it needs servicing.
