Introduction

Welcome to the School of Public Health which is on the Hohoe campus. The Hohoe campus is temporarily located at the Onchocerciasis Research Centre (OCRC) within the Hohoe Municipal Hospital. The close proximity to the Hospital is in fulfilling the practical nature of the SPH programme.

Background:

The School of Public Health is one of the eight schools under the University of Health and Allied Sciences. It has been set up:

  1. To provide higher education in the area of Public Health through teaching and research to persons suitably qualified and capable of benefiting from such education;
  2. To disseminate knowledge and the results of research and their applications to the needs and aspirations of the people of Ghana.
  3. To provide services to those contributing positively to improving the health status and overall quality of the life of Ghanaians and foster partnership with the community.

 

Note: The aims and objectives of the School fit into the mission and plans of the institution and national demand for its programmes.

 

Core Values and Philosophy of the School

The core values and philosophy of the School of Public Health of the University of Health and Allied Sciences comprises the following:

  1. Work with integrity and maintain an empowering environment based on mutual trust, respect and partnership among academic and non-academic staff, students and external units.
  2. Apply innovative educational approaches and technologies (including distance learning) to enhance access to programmes with a focus to train high caliber health professionals at all levels of education.
  3. Use modern information and communications technology and other educational tools to drive its programmes wherever possible.
  4. Seek through research and service to be relevant to the health needs of Ghana and beyond; with future programmes relating to emerging challenges and trends in both the health and education sectors.
  5. Be practically oriented by emphasizing community work as a compulsory component of all programmes offered in the School.
  6. Develop curriculum that entails effective balance between academic knowledge and competencies required in the world of work.
  7. Collaborate with the Ministries of Health and Education, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, professional bodies, the private sector and international institutions in the attainment of the mission of the University.

 

Student’s Admission, Progression and Graduation:

The following section provides Policies on minimum academic qualifications for admission into the BPH programme, requirements to be fulfilled for retention and the requirements for graduation and determining the grade point average in line with NCTE minimum requirements for admission to Tertiary Education Institutions in Ghana.

Student’s admission requirements

Ghanaian applicants

a) WASSCE/SSSCE candidates should have passes in Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science (Minimum of C6) and any three (3) Electives of the following; Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Elective Mathematics.

 

The minimum aggregate score in the three (3) core and three (3) elective subjects indicated in (a) above shall not exceed 24.

 

b) Candidates with Diploma certificates in health or related sciences who satisfy the requirements for admission shall enter at Level 300 (the third year of the 4-year bachelor’s degree programme).

c) Candidates with Diplomas awarded by recognized institutions1 and Institutions under the Ministry of Health shall require an FGPA of 2.5 or better/equivalent.Shortlisted candidates shall be required to sit an entrance examination and attend a selection interview.

d) Candidates with an FGPA of 3.25 or better/equivalent from institutions as indicated in (c) above shall attend a selection interview and considered eligible without sitting for an entrance examination.

e) Diploma certificates awarded by institutions other than those indicated in (c) above may be considered eligible on recommendation by a special committee to be appointed by the Dean.

The committee shall assess the candidate’s transcripts and the course content of the diploma to determine the suitability of his/her previous training and make recommendations accordingly, to the Dean.

f) Candidates in possession of general certificates from institutions as indicated in (c) above shall have to take and pass a six weeks ‘Brush-up’ course.

g) Individuals who satisfy the condition in (f) above shall be interviewed and admitted to Level 300.

 

Proposed Site

The school is proposed to be sited along Fodome road on a land identified in the Hohoe area. The land size which is 721.05 Acres is located 11km away from the Hohoe Township and 1km away from the Fodome Township
