The Department of Microbiology and Immunology contributes to the promotion of health in Ghana and internationally through the pursuit of excellence in training medical students and promoting good quality research. The department is made up of faculty with background and expertise across the various fields of microbiology and immunology. Our faculty is a good blend of experienced and enthusiastic scientists involved in teaching, research and clinical work. The department is keen on forming relevant collaborations with other institutions to address both local and international health problems. The department as whole or individual members are involved in collaborations with various institutions such as Virginia Tech Carillion, School of Medicine, USA and MRC Human Immunology unit, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine and University of Oxford, UK. Ongoing research in the department covers areas like genetic diversity of Rotavirus, HPV genotyping and malaria immunology. The department will soon begin a unique graduate programme that expertly combines microbiology and Immunology to address most of the infectious diseases prevailing in the world.
In addition to teaching and research the department is fully involved in community service. Clinical staff from the department coordinates the management of HIV/STI’s and tuberculosis in the teaching hospital. Services they offer include and STI screening, prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT), antiretroviral therapy (ART), the diagnosing and management of tuberculosis and community based activities which are carried out together with the public health unit in the hospital and the department of community medicine in the medical school.
