Department Of Central Laboratory Services – Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

The Laboratory Sub-BMC provides diagnostic services for both in-patients and out-patients of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as well as those referred from other Hospitals and Clinics.

It has an additional function of conducting Research, Teaching and Professional Staff Development.

Working in a team with other Sub-BMCs to provide the highest quality of timely and efficient laboratory services, and to ensure excellence in teaching and research with highly competent and well motivated staff.

Vision

– To become a centre of excellence in Laboratory diagnostic services and the most referred point/facility in Medical Laboratory Services within the sub region.

Profile of SUB-BMC
The Laboratory Sub BMC is made up of the following units offering services related to the underlisted specialties:

– Microbiology
– Chemical Pathology
– Haematology
– Immunology

Department/Units
– The Laboratory Sub-BMC has the Central Laboratory as the main Department with other Satellite laboratories or Units. The Units or Satellite Laboratories include the following;
– Child Health Laboratory
– Maternity Laboratory
– Fevers Units
– Chest Clinic

Management Team 
The Central Laboratory has a five (5) member Management Committee made up of the Head of the Sub BMC, the Lab Manager, the Administrator, the Accountant and the Engineer. The Sub-BMC has co-opted three Heads of Departments and four Technical Supervisors as part of the team. The Management Team provides direction through planning, budgeting, organization and supervision. It also functions as a liaison between the Sub-BMC and the Central Management of the Hospital.

Equipment Availability
In the year 2010 the Hospital acquired a brand new Applied Biosystem DNA equipment, ELISA Plate Reader with washer, Automate Blood Culture Machine from BD and ALBACOS 5 Haematology Analyzer.

Automation / Networking
Extension works on the networking has been completed.

Continuing Education and In-Service Training
There were Continuing Education Programmes for staff towards W.H.O. Accreditation of the Laboratory, Review of the Laboratory’s Organogram, Customer Care and Quality Control. The education programmes were aimed at improving the quality of services at the Laboratory.
Residents Doctors, Medical Students and Allied Health Science Students went through the department, for their practical training.

Research Activities
Various research projects were undertaken at the Central Laboratory and jointly supervised by our staff. These included student projects, as well as portions of other major projects by staff of the University of Ghana Medical School and other institutions
