Tropical Plants and Soils Department

Plant Sciences is the study of grain and forage crop production, weed science, genetics, plant breeding, crop physiology and plant biotechnology Soil and water are our most important resources. They provide the food, fiber and foundation of our existence. Soil science is the study of the soil as a component of natural and man-made systems. Soil science is the key factor in food production and is at the forefront of environmental and natural resource issues such as land use, soil contamination, ground water quality and waste disposal.

The Tropical Crops and Soils Department strives to integrate and disseminate basic and applied knowledge about field crops, cropping systems, soils, agricultural watersheds and crop-related entomology in an ever changing world.  We educate and work with citizens to help solve problems related to field crop agriculture and natural systems, rural and urban economies and communities, natural resource management, and environmental conservation

Animal Science Department

The animal science department seeks to discover, develop, and disseminate knowledge and skills in the rearing of domesticated animals for the benefit of the animals, humanity, and the environment. The department offers you the opportunity to apply all of the core sciences to the study of basic animal genetics, nutrition, physiology, growth, and management.

The Department supervises the following courses within the college

  • Anatomy & Physiology Of Farm Animals
  • Non-Traditional Farming I (Snails, Grasscutter, Etc)
  • Monogastrics Production
  • Ruminants Production
  • Fish Farming and Aquaculture
  • Animal Health and Disease Control
  • Introductory Animal Breeding
  • Animal Nutrition

Agribusiness and Extension Department

We prepare students to be

  • Decision Makers, by teaching economic concepts, and analytical and communication skills;
  • Leaders, by instilling confidence and encouraging leadership and team building skills; and
  • Informed Citizens, by providing an understanding of local, state, national and international affairs

This department strives to advance knowledge and impart skills to breed a new generation of dynamic agricultural entrepreneurs who can practice farming as a business, who can profitably manage all businesses related to the farming and agriculture industries. The department also hosts the institute’s extension programs and manages agricultural extension education and practice. The department is also in charge of the College’s sustainable agriculture and tree planting outreach programmes.

Higher National Diploma in Tropical Agriculture – HN-DipTA Approved and regulated by the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX)  – to be launched in August 2013
