About us

Director’s  statement

Accra is the capital of Ghana and also the Greater Accra Region, one of the ten administrative divisions of Ghana. Ghana gained its independence from the British in 1975 and became the first African country, South of the Sahara, to free itself from colonial domination and set the pace for other African countries to obtain self‐rule in the 1960s. Since independence, Accra has grown both in terms of population and in economic importance in Africa. Often referred to as the Gateway to West Africa, it serves as the commercial and business hub of the sub‐region because of its political and economic stability. The varied architecture of the city represents its history with pre‐colonial, colonial, post‐colonial and contemporary western‐style condominiums and buildings. Visitors to the city have access to modern hotels, restaurants, malls, and entertainment centers. They are also able to visit cultural heritage sights that are spread all over the country.

NYU Accra offers courses in the humanities and social sciences, taught by internationally acclaimed African scholars drawn from local universities. The program offers opportunities for deep immersion in the society through its community service and academic internship programs both of which allow students to engage with a range of agencies, institutions and organizations. Students have volunteered with such as micro‐finance, media and health care organizations, schools , orphanages, and more. These community‐learning programs give students a deeper understanding of the local people and culture than they would obtain in the classroom alone.

NYU Accra’s academic center facilitates research collaborations as well as conferences, workshops and seminars between NYU, faculty members and their local counterparts. Faculty and students interested in disciplines such as emerging economics, public health, education, gender and equality, visual and performance arts, etc., ‐ especially those interested in these areas as they relate to the developing world ‐ find Ghana an ideal place to study and work. We at the site welcome faculty and students who desire to know and understand the world in new ways and who seek to gain insight into the complexity and diversity of the global south in order to become global citizens.

As the first African nation to free itself from colonial rule, Ghana has long been considered the gateway to West Africa and enjoys a promising future. Located in Accra, Ghana’s vibrant capital city and among the most intellectually and culturally vibrant cities on the continent, NYU Accra takes advantage of programs and facilities at one of the prominent higher educational institutions in West Africa: The University of Ghana-Legon. Students may enroll in up to two courses at the University of Ghana-Legon, complimenting multidisciplinary courses offered at NYU’s own academic and research facility in Accra. The curriculum, which includes more than a dozen areas of study, fosters academic and personal growth by using the city as a classroom. Students will have further opportunity for cultural engagement through a host of internship and volunteer opportunities. Through your academic courses and extracurricular activities, you will experience the artifacts of a history that has transformed both Africa and the New World.
