What Is MDF Plywood?

Medium-Density Fibreboard Is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood.

Why Use MDF Plywood?

Builders and homeowners love using MDF because it’s durable and highly cost-effective. It’s also a solution for a wide range of applications, from doors to storage cabinets, molding and trim. MDF offers great stability, even when there are significant changes in temperature or humidity.

Strength Of MDF Plywood?

The ultimate strength of MDF will vary with the particular product characteristics, but a typical minimum value is 3,500 psi with an elasticity value of 0.35 million psi. Eastern white pine lumber values (average and not minimum; for clear wood) are 8,600 psi and 1.24 million psi.

What Is MDF Good For?

Medium-density fiberboard is the most versatile building material I know of. Because it’s inexpensive and fairly durable, medium density fiberboard s a good choice for practical projects like shelving and storage cabinets. But MDF wood is great for decorative projects too.

Is MDF Plywood Good?

MDF is generally cheaper than plywood. The surface of MDF is very smooth which makes it a great surface for painting. MDF is very consistent throughout, so cut edges appear smooth and won’t have voids or splinters. Because of the smooth edges, you can use a router to create decorative edges.

Where Should You Not Use MDF?

There are a few areas where MDF should never be used  kitchen or bathroom cabinets and trim in the bathrooms. These are the two areas we see the most failure because of moisture. Window sills are also problematic if the windows have any sort of condensation or leaking problems.

Is MDF More Waterproof Than Plywood?

MDF tends to soak up water far more easily than plywood, then warps and swells once wet. While water can eventually damage plywood, in general, you’ll find that plywood holds up quite well outdoors.

How Long Does MDF Last?

10 years

The durability of MDF depends on the quality of the product. A cheap MDF board might only last one year before breaking down. On the other hand, high-quality MDF could last up to 10 years.
