About GCUC Department Of Medical Laboratory Technology

The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology is one of the new departments of the School of Health and Allied Sciences in GCUC. It is a four year programme leading to the award of B.Sc. edical Laboratory Technology.

In the first two years of the programme (described as the foundation or pre-clinical stage) students take lectures in some basic science courses and introductory laboratory courses including laboratory safety among other relevant areas of study. The curriculum at this stage emphasizes on the principles and standard procedures involved in laboratory testing. The laboratory practical sessions at this stage of the programme will be offered mainly at the department laboratories.

In the 3rd and 4th  years of the programme (described as the clinical laboratory stage), students take lectures in the core clinical laboratory science courses, and other relevant courses such as Laboratory Quality Management Systems, Biostatistics, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation Skills. The curriculum at this stage of the programme is designed in such a way that allows students to go out of campus to undertake laboratory practical sessions in selected accredited hospital laboratories within the metropolis.

In this age of evidence-based healthcare practice, medical laboratory services provide the largest body of empirical data that constitute the evidence. Laboratory professionals perform a myriad of laboratory tests to provide critical information to physicians to enable them to make diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic decisions on patient’s conditions.

The work of Medical Laboratory Technologist or Biomedical Scientist is highly varied, practical; employing multifaceted approaches, and analytical. It is often based on a diversity of scientific principles and methods. Medical laboratory technology is a very dynamic profession, such that the responsibilities of medical laboratory scientists will continue to change and expand as new medical knowledge is discovered in our ever-evolving environment.

Recognizing the critical role of laboratory testing in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, it is imperative for practitioners to possess a strong academic background in the basic medical sciences and in the major disciplines of medical laboratory sciences. Medical Laboratory Technologists or Biomedical Scientist should be able to demonstrate a high level of technical and analytical proficiency with ability to use automated equipment and computerized instrumentsand other sophisticated laboratory equipment, and to evaluate test results, develop and modify procedures, and establish and monitor quality assurance systems, with the view to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results.

The programme offered at Garden City University College seeks not only to address the inadequacy of requisite manpower in this field of medicine, but most importantly to produce highly qualified Medical Laboratory Technologists or Biomedical Scientists who will deliver accurate, reliable and credible laboratory results for patient care.
