About Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital
INTRODUCTION
The practice of anesthesia has expanded well beyond rendering patient insensible to pain during surgery or labour and delivery. The specialty is unique in that it requires working familiarity with other specialties, including surgery and its subspecialties, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics as well as clinical pharmacology, applied physiology and biochemical technology. The application of recent advances in biomedical technology in clinical anesthesia continues to make anesthesia an exciting and rapidly evolving specialty.
FUNCTIONS OF THE DIRECTORATE OF ANESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE
- Assessing, consulting and preparing patients for anesthesia.
- Rendering patients insensible to pain during surgical, obstetric/gynecological therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
- Monitoring and restoring Homeostasis in peri-operative period.
- Monitoring and restoration of homeostasis in critically ill patients.
- Diagnosing and treating acute and chronic painful syndromes
- a). Managing and teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
b). Teaching, Supervising and evaluating the performance of medical and medical personnel involved in anesthesia, respiratory care and critical care.
- Conducting research at the clinical science level.

The intensive care unit is headed by Dr. Sanjeev Singh. There are eight (8) beds at the Intensive Care Unit.

The directorate runs pre-anaesthetic clinic on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at Poly

SCHOOL OF ANAESTHESIA
School of Anaesthesia was established in 1987 to train Nurse Anesthetists with student
Population of 14.
The programme runs for 18 months. Advance Diploma certificates are awarded to its students upon completion of the programme. The school has since trained 800 Nurse Anesthetists in Ghana.
The current student population is 52. The school is being headed by Dr. Antwi-Kusi Consultant Anesthesiologist
