What Is Modem?
A Modulator-demodulator or modem is a computer hardware device that converts data from a digital format into a format suitable for an analog transmission medium such as telephone or radio.
How Does Modem Works?
Two modems are always needed, one at each end. At the transmitting end, the modem converts the digital signal from the DTE into an analog signal by modulating a carrier. At the receiving end, the modem demodulates the carrier and hands over the demodulated digital signal to the DTE

There are three types of modems: cable, digital subscriber line (DSL) and dial-up. A cable modem uses coaxial cables that connect to the back of the modem and the bolt-like outlet in your wall or on your cable box. This type of modem delivers high speed internet to your device.

The word “modem” is a portmanteau of “modulator-demodulator.” It’s called a modulator-demodulator because it modulates digital signals to analog signals and demodulates analog signals back to digital signals.
