Requirement For Registration Ghana Card in Ghana

Pursuant to section 8(1) of the National Identity Register Act, 2008 (Act 750) as substituted by section 3(a) of the National Identity Register (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 950), a citizen of Ghana is required to submit any of the following identity documents to register and be issued with the national identity card (Ghana Card):

a birth certificate;

a valid passport;

a valid certificate of acquired citizenship; and

any other information as may be required by the Authority.

Per section 8(2) of Act 750 as substituted by section 3(b) of Act 950, where an applicant is unable to submit any of the documents specified above, the National Identification Authority (NIA) shall require

a relative of the applicant to identify the applicant under oath; or

two persons determined by the Governing Board of NIA to identify the applicant under oath, where the applicant has no known relatives.

Further to section 3(b) aforesaid, the general public is hereby notified that the Governing Board of NIA has determined that any two of the following categories of persons, who are aged 18 years and above, of sound mind and have been registered and issued with the Ghana Card, may identify applicants who have no known relatives:

a practicing or retired professional teacher (including Principals, Headmasters and Head teachers)

a Gazetted Chief

a serving or retired Magistrate or Judge

a licensed Professional, including a Medical Doctor, a Nurse, a Lawyer, an Accountant, an Engineer and an Architect

a serving or retired Civil Servant

a serving or retired Public Servant

a serving or retired Clergyman

a serving or retired Imam

a serving or retired Catechist

a serving or retired member of the Security Services, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Prisons Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Bureau of National Investigation, Customs, Excise and Preventive Service of the Ghana Revenue Authority and National Security

a current or past Member of Parliament

a current or past Assemblyman

a current or past Member of a Unit Committee.

Who is eligible for Ghana card?

The Ghana Card is a national identity card that is issued by the Ghanaian authorities to Ghanaian citizens ,both resident and non-resident, and legally and permanently resident foreign nationals.

It is proof of identity, citizenship and residence of the holder. The current version is in ID1 format and biometric.
