How To Become A High Court Judge In Ghana

A high court judge is a judge appointed to decide cases in a supreme court of justice.

Steps to Becoming a Judge

You must have attained at least first degree in Law (LLB)

There is a judiciary examination you have to take after you have acquired a law degree in an accredited institution.

Candidates for the exam must be between 21-35 years.

They must have a minimum of seven years of practice.

The judicial exam is in three phases:

  • Preliminary exam
  • Mains
  • Viva-Voce or interview.

If you want to become a high court judge, you must have been called to the Ghana Bar for at least ten years.

Those who have the ambition to become circuit court judges should have been in the law profession for about five years. Then, those who have been at the bar for about three years can qualify for magistrates.

Important Things to Note

One important thing to note is that candidates who wish to climb the ladder in their law career to become judges must be in good standing with the state bar association.

Ghana School of Law Fees

The information below is the Ghana School of Law fees school fees schedule for the academic year.

The Ghana school of law fees schedule is the amount payable by students of the institution for the academic session.

First Installment Acceptance of Admission —     GHC 8,200.00

The second Installment, To be paid before the first term —    GHC 3,000.00

The third Installment, To be paid before the Second term —    GHC 2,000.00

Amounting to a total of — GHC 13,200.00

* All drafts should be made in the board legal education

Furthermore, the Institute reserves the right to change fees without prior notice to the student. Fee changes are subject to approval by the Governing Council of the Ghana school of law.

Lastly, please note that you need to have a first degree before being eligible to enter the Ghana School of Law.

So for instance, someone with a Law degree from the University of Ghana or any other tertiary institution offering law will find it much easier to enter the Ghana School of law.

How much are Ghanaian judges paid?

The salary range for the majority of workers in Judges – from GH₵730.28 to GH₵6,775.70 per month. Judges preside over civil and criminal proceedings in courts of law.
