What Is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin Is an antibiotic used for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections. This includes respiratory tract infections, skin infections, chlamydia infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, and syphilis. Antibiotics such as erythromycin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

What Is Erythromycin Used For?

Erythromycin is used to prevent and treat infections in many different parts of the body, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, diphtheria, intestinal amebiasis, acute pelvic inflammatory disease, Legionnaire’s disease, pertussis, and syphilis.

How Many Days Should I Take Erythromycin?

It is usually given 2 to 4 times a day. Your doctor will advise you on how long to take erythromycin for (usually 5 to 10 days), but depending on the infection, it could be longer. Always take your erythromycin exactly as your doctor has told you.

How Should This Medicine Be Used?

Erythromycin comes as a capsule, tablet, delayed-release (releases the medication in the intestine to prevent break-down of the medication by stomach acids) capsule, delayed-release tablet, and an oral suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. It usually is taken with or without food every 6 hours (four times a day), every 8 hours (three times a day), or every 12 hours (twice a day). Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take erythromycin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Shake the suspension well before each use to mix the medication evenly.

If you are taking the suspension, do not use a household spoon to measure your dose. Use the measuring spoon, dropper, or cup that came with the medication or use a spoon made especially for measuring medication.

Swallow the capsules and tablets whole with a full glass of water; do not chew or crush them.

Continue to take erythromycin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking erythromycin without talking to your doctor.

How Long Does Erythromycin Stay In Your System?

The elimination half-life of oral erythromycin was 3.5 hours according to one study and ranged between 2.4-3.1 hours in another study. Repetitive dosing of erythromycin leads to increased elimination half-life. The clearance of erythromycin in healthy subjects was 0.53 ± 0.13 l/h/kg after a 125mg intravenous dose.
