What Is VHS?

VHS is a standard for consumer-level analog video recording on tape cassettes. From the 1950s, magnetic tape video recording became a major contributor to the television industry, via the first commercialized video tape recorders.

From the 1950s, magnetic tape video recording became a major contributor to the television industry, via the first commercialized video tape recorders (VTRs). At that time, the expensive devices were used only in professional environments such as television studios and medical imaging (fluoroscopy). In the 1970s, videotape entered home use, creating the home video industry and changing the economics of the motion picture and television businesses. The television industry viewed videocassette recorders (VCRs) as having the power to disrupt their business, while television users viewed the VCR as a means to take control of their viewing experiences by allowing them to watch programming repeatedly and at more convenient times.

What Is VHS Made Of?

What’s inside a VHS?

  • Top and bottom pieces of the outer shell plastic (polypropylene)
  • A moving, spring-loaded door to protect the tape.
  • Two spools to hold the tape.
  • An 800 foot long, ½ inch wide piece of oxide-coated Mylar tape that acts as the recording medium.

How Does VHS Work?

The Video Home System is a magnetic tape onto which video and audio signals are recorded. The principle is the same as a cassette tape, but an audio signal tops out at about 20,000 Hz, which isn’t a lot of information compared to video. A slow tape moving over a stationary magnetic head will do.

Why Are VHS Important?

The VHS was the first widely used piece of technology that made watching films at home a snap. Shortly after the device came onto the market, movie rental stores such as Blockbuster began selling and renting movies to people everywhere. It was finally so easy to watch anything you wanted practically at any time.

How Long Do VHS Last?

10 to 25 years

VHS tape life expectancy varies from one VHS tape to the next. In general, VHS deterioration of 10–20% occurs over a period of 10 to 25 years. Better quality tapes have a slightly longer lifespan, as do VHS tapes that have been kept in a climate-controlled setting.
