HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The department of Child Health established in 1983 remains committed to the provision of excellent Paediatric Services to all children within the Kumasi Metropolis and beyond.  On a yearly basis the department provides various forms of services to nearly 11,276 in-patient and 20,239 out-patients.

The Department is made up of the Paediatric Emergency Unit (PEU), which serves as the first point of call to all children between the ages of two (2) months to fourteen (14) years requiring admission to hospital and provides a 24 hour service all year round.  Patients after the initial stabilization are moved to the main wards.

PROF. E. O. Y. ADDO-YOBOHEAD OF DIRECTORATE

Ward B4 provides services to children with Kidney diseases, nutritional and Gastroenterology conditions as well as Infectious Diseases.
Ward B5 provides services to children with Neurological, Hematological and Oncological conditions.
Ward C5 provides Cardiology services (both congenital and acquired heart diseases) and Pulmonology Services (like Pneumonia and Asthma) to all children.
The Mother Baby Unit (MBU) serves as a high dependency and low dependency unit for all neonates.
The newly established Neonatal and Paediatric intensive care Unit (PICU & NICU) provides very specialist care for critically ill(severely injured, life threatening medical events) infants, children and teenagers.

The Directorate is mandated to undertake the following:

  • Paediatric Specialist  and subspecialist Medical Care
  • Training of graduate and post graduate medical students in paediatric medicine.
  • Conduct Research

The Department also provides out- patient specialist clinic services such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, Sickle cell, Neurology, Renal, Asthma, TB and HIV.

  • Provides neonatal support services to Suntreso and Kumasi-South Hospitals
  • Provides telephonic consults to periphery
  • Organizes Child Health Education or Radio/TV
