All students entering the University as first year undergraduate students (Level 100) are required to study all the  courses courses offered in the School as part of the University required courses. It is generally expected that students who gained admission into the University would have obtained at the SHS level, at least a credit (C4, C5, C6) in all the courses including Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry. Unfortunately many of these students would have learnt some of the topics at the SHS by rote, therefore finding very little connection between the theory and practical application of the various sciences or their relevance. Their background in Mathematics may also have been very rudimentary and their writing skills, in many cases do require a vast improvement. The key objective of these programmes is to provide a broad-based education in all three fundamental sciences and mathematics, and it gives students the opportunity to go over the SHS sciences and build upon them for their specific needs in their future professional courses. A second major emphasis throughout the programme is the development of scientific principles and reasoning, problem solving and transferable skills. The courses are taught during the first year. Separate Laboratory Practical courses are held in Biology and Chemistry.

No degrees or certificates are awarded at the end of the programmes offered by the School. However, students are expected to have passed these courses prior to embarking on the school-specific programmes.

Undergraduate Programmes:

The SBBS is in the process of mounting its own undergraduate programmes which will start next academic year (2015/2016) and this course will be housed in the Department of Biomedical Sciences.
