PHILOSOPHY
The Department of Nursing (DON) believes that each individual, family and community has a right to health, irrespective of race, colour, creed or religion. The nurse plays a pivotal role in the provision of health services to all persons in a variety of settings and at various levels of care including health promotion, illness prevention, health restoration and care for the dying. DON recognizes the relationship of the person, environment, health and nursing as being central to professional nursing. Man, as a bio-psychosocial being is worthy of dignity and respect. The nurse’s actions in providing care focus on the patient to ensure that he/she achieves optimal level of health. The goal is to maximize the person’s potential and allow him/her to carry out activities as desired. The nurse uses the nursing process in the planning, providing and managing the care of individuals, families, groups and communities.
The ideals of the Nursing Programme are enshrined in ‘bridging the theory-practice gap’ which is derived from the central philosophy of the University College which is to ‘bridge the gap between industry and academia’. The philosophy is underpinned by the understanding of widening access to higher education in nursing and the belief that a student’s learning outcomes can be influenced by factors such as individual learning styles, communication skills, personal values and ethical principles as ascribed by the International Council of Nursing. The DON participates in building experience and expertise that ensures that the professional nurse possesses knowledge, skill and competencies to practice within the essential roles of a nurse, including caregiver, educator, patient advocate and manager at the local, national and international levels.
Teaching and learning is considered a shared process with a focus on fostering the development of critical thinking and creativity in the nurse who will be an efficient and effective leader in the healthcare delivery system. Through understanding of learning theories and instructional methodologies, faculty in the DON believes and supports a student-centered environment for learning.
AIMS
The aims of the B.Sc. Nursing Programme are to:
Prepare graduates to be eligible to complete the registration process required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana to practice as a professional nurse in Ghana; and
Have the necessary knowledge and skills to enter postgraduate study in nursing.
Student Outcomes:
Graduates of West End University College B.Sc. Nursing Programme will be able to:
Integrate current knowledge from the biological, social, physical sciences with nursing theory and research in the provision of quality nursing care to individuals, families, groups, and communities.
Demonstrate the application of critical thinking skills and clinical decision making in the use of the nursing process in the planning, provision and management of nursing care.
Provide caring, spiritual and culturally appropriate nursing care for patients at any stage of the life span.
Assume responsibility and accountability for own actions in the delivery of nursing care in accordance with standards of care and ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses.
Communicate effectively in a variety of spoken, written, and technological formats.
Collaborate with members of the health team in the care of individuals and groups in a variety of health care settings.
Contribute to the advancement of nursing through application of the research process in nursing and health care.
Assume leadership roles within interdisciplinary health care teams and the profession of nursing.
