Applicants should have good single honours in Law or a joint honours degree with Law as the major component. However, we would also encourage applicants who have relevant professional and personal experience and the potential to achieve the academic standard.
ABOUT THE COURSE
The LLM International Criminal Law and Security provides the opportunity for you to explore and analyses global relationships between criminal laws and national security. You will consider the tensions between security and human rights that exist in the contemporary UK, European and international legal frameworks.
The Law Division enjoys a reputation for high quality teaching in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Some modules are also used by students on the international Relations course, providing you with further insight into global issues.

MODULES
To be awarded the LLM International criminal Law and Security you must successfully complete the following modules:

Comparative Criminal Law
Analyses the criminal law of England and Wales in the context of criminal law in other jurisdiction.

International Organised Crime
Analyses the threat posed to law and order by international Organised Crime (IOC), with specific focus on the institutional and legislative frameworks of the UK and EU.

International and European Human Rights
Analyses how effectively European and international law recognizes, protects and enforces human rights standards in the context of specific legal documents, in particular, human rights violations such as alleged crimes against humanity and terrorism as well as other contemporary issues.

National Security, Terrorism and the Rule of Law
Analyses the nature and legal definition of terrorism and examines the response to terrorism (policy and law) in relation to the UK, Europe and other jurisdiction.

European Crime and Security
Analyses the development of the European Union’s law and policy in the areas of freedom, security and justice.Inclusive of the common foreign and security policy, areas traditionally the remit of Member State’s governments.

Research Methods
Provides you with the relevant skills to undertake an independent piece of research.

Dissertation
An opportunity for you to carry out research over a sustained period of time,  probing  issues of interest to you which have  arisen out of previous study and interests.

ASSESMENT
The programme is assessed via a combination of time constrained reports, critical legal arguments, seminar presentations, module essays examinations and submission of a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
This programme will provide you with the knowledge and application to work in or continue your studies in human rights, security and terrorism. You could also expand your academic knowledge through PhD studies in your field.
