Medical Biochemistry And Molecular Biology

Modern Medical Biochemistry as taught in the School of Medical Sciences encompasses nutrition, genetics and molecular biology. The Department of Medical Biochemistry uses modern student-centered and integrated teaching methodology to deliver the relevant modern biochemical knowledge to students enrolled on the MBChBprogramme of the School of Medical Sciences.  This unique teaching methodology talked about here is the problem-based learning (PBL) teaching methodology. Since Biochemistry does not appear to be the best friend of medical students, the use of PBL methodology minimizes the seeming boredom associated with the teaching of certain vital topics in this exciting area of science.

To this end, we teach the perceived difficult core concepts to ensure students’ comprehension and assimilation in an interactive lecture-based format whiles their application is presented to students in a form of real or virtual medical problem waved in the context of relevant PBL scenarios for students. At the end, students get the chance to breakdown the difficult concept and apply it to real life situation in a PBL discussion. So, the detailed mechanisms of certain enzymes in vital pathways as well as the consequences of factors that affect such pathways are fully discussed.

This approach makes biochemistry more friendly, practical and less theoretical to students.  Since biochemistry is not taught in isolation, due to the integrated nature of the UCCSMS curriculum, students get the chance to appreciate how biochemistry is related to the other disciplines of medicine. At the end, students find it much more refreshing to accept biochemistry as an integral part of medicine and a successful careerin medical practice.

To ensure students success in this area, the department has competent Faculty with varied expertise to meet varied students needs, interest and expectation. Hence, our teaching is influenced greatly by our research interest which cut across infectious and chronic non-communicable diseases to ensure that our students stay up-to-date with current global trends whilst keeping track of the Ghanaian and African interest. You are therefore invited to either join us train the next or be trained as the nextgeneration Physician-Scientist.
