GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

i.Masters Programmes

At the time of application, applicants should possess a

Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent from a recognized

Institution in the relevant field of study. Preference will be given to applicants with a FIRST CLASS, SECOND CLASS (UPPER OR LOWER DIVISION)

ii.PhD Programmes

Candidates applying for Doctor of Philosophy degree must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized

Institution and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed programme.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME

Unless otherwise stated,

a.Masters Programmes (Full-Time) are of Two (2) Calendar Years and (Part-Time) Three (3) Calendar Years duration.

b.PhD Programmes (Full-Time) are of Four (4) Calendar Years and (Part-Time) are of Five (5) Calendar Years duration.

MODE OF APPLICATION

Sale of E-Vouchers/Forms for admission shall commence on

22nd February, 2016.

i.First of all, candidates must purchase an eVoucher by paying an application fee of Two Hundred and Twenty Ghana Cedis (GH¢220.00) at the following banks: GCB, Ecobank and Unibank.

ii.Upon payment of the application fee, candidates will receive an eVoucher containing an application number and PIN that will grant access to the online admissions portal.

iii.Candidates should then proceed to online admissions website:https://admissions.knust.edu.gh/pgadmission snew/ and begin the application process.

iv.Once the process has been completed, candidates must print out 3 copies of the completed application form from the portal and submit them (by post) to the School of Graduate Studies along with all relevant documents (Photocopies of Certificates, Recommendation Letters, and (Transcript for those attending KNUST for the first time)) to the following address:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Admission Requirements

Candidates applying for Doctor of Philosophy degree must have a Master’s degree or its equivalent in Agriculture or related disciplines from KNUST or any recognised University and shall submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed programme.

2. Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or related discipline from a recognized university is required for MPhil degree in the Department. Preference is given to applicants with First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) degrees.

Applicants seeking admission to PhD programmes should normally have either MSc or MPhil degree in the relevant discipline. In addition, all applicants will have to pass an interview.

Admission Requirements

MSc/MPhil Agribusiness Management– The programme accepts first degree holders with a minimum of Second Class (Lower division) in Agribusiness Management, Business Administration, Agriculture or relevant subject areas from an approved University or Institution of higher learning. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and MSc candidates must in addition, demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

MPhil Agricultural Economics: Applicants for the MPhil degree programme in Agricultural Economics must have a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) Second Class honours (Lower division) or its equivalent in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics or other related disciplines from a recognized University or Institute of higher learning.

MPhil Agricultural Extension – A minimum of Second Class (Lower division) in Agriculture or relevant subject areas from an approved University or Institution of Higher learning.

MPhil Sustainable and Integrated Rural Development

Candidates for SIRD must possess good first degrees (1st Class, 2nd Class Upper or their equivalent) in sustainable and rural development, natural resources management, environmental management, agriculture, planning, land economy, law health, business, social and natural sciences from recognized Institutions. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

PhD Agribusiness Management: The programme will admit MPhil degree holders in Agribusiness Management from approved Universities or Institutions of Higher learning. Other MSc/MPhil or equivalent degree holders in relevant subject from an approved University or Institution of Higher learning may be required to take relevant courses from the MSc/MPhil Agribusiness programme as prescribed by the Departmental Board.

PhD Agricultural Economics: Candidates applying for Doctor of Philosophy degree must have a Masters degree in Agricultural Economics or its equivalent from recognized Universities or Institutions of Higher learning. Candidates may be required to take relevant courses at the MPhil level as prescribed by the Departmental Board.

PhD Agricultural Extension: MSc/MPhil degree in Agriculture or relevant subject areas from recognized Universities or Institutions of Higher learning is required. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by

the Department and demonstrate their ability to pay required fees.

FACULTY OF RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES

1. Department of Wildlife and Range Management PhD – Wildlife and Range Management

The PhD programme is open to holders of Masters Degree in Wildlife and Range Management, Forest Natural Resources Management and other related disciplines. In addition, candidates will be required to pass an interview before admission.

MPhil Wildlife and Range Management Admission Requirements

The MPhil programme is open to holders of First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) degrees in Wildlife and Range Management, Forestry and Natural Resources Management. Other related disciplines with relevant field experience may also be considered for admission. In addition, candidates will be required to pass an interview before admission.

MSc Gisnaturem (Natural Resources Management) Admission Requirements

Applicants should have a Bachelor of Science degree (minimum Second Class Division) or equivalent from an accredited University in a discipline related to the course, preferably combined with working experience in a related field.

Candidates applying for admission from both institutions (KNUST and UT).

Candidates meeting the above requirements are certified as acceptable by both institutions before enrolling on the programme.

Candidates will attend and pass an interview session with a panel from KNUST before being granted admission.

2. Department of Silviculture and Forest Management MPhil Natural Resource & Environmental Governance Duration: 2 Years

Admission Requirements

A bachelor degree (1st Class or 2nd Class Upper Division) in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management, Agriculture, Engineering, Planning, Land Economy, Law, Business, Social or Natural Sciences. Applicants with 2nd Class Lower and some work experience may be admitted after an interview.

MPhil Silviculture and Forest Management Duration: 2 Years

Admission Requirements

A bachelor degree (First Class or Second Class Upper Division) in Natural Resource Management, Agriculture or Natural Sciences.

PhD Silviculture and Forest Management Duration: 4 Years

Admission Requirements

A holder of a minimum of Second Class Upper Division in their first degree, plus a good master’s degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management, Agriculture, Land Economy, Law, Business, Social or Natural Sciences. Applicants with 2nd Class Lower Division and a good

Master’s degree in addition to some work experience may be admitted after an interview. For Part-Time students the duration is Five Years.

Candidates with Second Class Lower Division may be considered after an interview or must demonstrate considerable experience in research in the relevant field. Preferred disciplines are in Fisheries, Aquaculture, Biological Sciences or relevant aspects of Agriculture.

B.COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

1. Department of Economics

a. MSc Economics – A One (1) Year Programme

Admission Requirements

i)A good first degree, at least Second Class (Lower Division) in the following disciplines; BA/BSc Economics, (with Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Law, Sociology, Political Science and History); Bachelor of Business Administration, BSc Mathematics / Statistics / Engineering / Physics / Actuarial Science/ Environmental Science / Land Economy / Natural Resource Management; BA/BSc Geography / Geography and Resource Development / Geography and Rural Development / Geography and Regional Planning; BA/BSc Development Studies and related disciplines.

ii)Applicants without Bachelor’s degree must have a Master’s degree from a recognized tertiary institution in any of the disciplines listed in (i) above.

b.MPhil Economics – A Two (2) Year Programme Admission Requirements

A good first degree in Economics at least Second Class (Upper Division). Candidates must have done Econometrics, Advanced Economic Theory and Mathematics for Economists at the undergraduate level in a recognized tertiary institution. A thesis proposal is NOT required. Admission is subject to passing an interview.

2.Department of Modern Languages MPhil French

Admission Requirements

Candidates must hold a good First degree in French (Second Class Lower Division or better or a postgraduate qualification relevant to the area of study) from a recognised University. In addition, candidates will be required to pass a written examination and interview.

PhD French

Admission Requirements

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in French from a recognised University and must submit a research proposal acceptable to the Postgraduate Coordinating Team. In addition, candidates will be required to pass a selection interview.

3. Department of English

MPhil English (Literature)

Admission Requirements

An applicant seeking admission into the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in English should possess a good Bachelor’s degree in

English, or in a related discipline(s) or in a professional qualification approved by the Academic Board as being

Equivalent to a good bachelor’s degree. In addition, candidates will be required to pass a selection interview.

PhD (Literature) Admission Requirements

A candidate must have a research MPhil degree in English.

4. Department of Geography and Rural Development MPhil Geography and Rural Development

Admission Requirements

A good first degree in Geography, Development Studies, Natural Sciences or other Geography related disciplines. A First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) is preferred. Candidates shall be selected at a selection interview. A synopsis of proposed thesis is a requirement.

PhD

Admission Requirements

Master’s Degree in Geography, Development Studies or other

Geography related disciplines. Candidates shall be selected at a selection interview. Oral presentation of thesis proposal is a requirement.

5. Department of Religious Studies

MA/MPhil

MA (One Year) – A candidate must have obtained a good first degree (Second Class Lower Division or better) in either Religious Studies or Theology from a recognised University or accredited Theological Seminary/Institution.

MPhil (Two Years) – A candidate must have obtained a good first degree (Second Class Upper Division or better) in either

Religious Studies or Theology from a recognised University or accredited Theological Seminary/Institution.

For the MA and MPhil programmes a candidate with the Social Sciences or Humanities background must in addition at least have a Diploma in Theology/Religious Studies from a recognised/accredited Institution or Seminary. Admission is subject to passing an entrance examination and interview.

PhD

Admission Requirements

a)Candidates for the PhD programme must have a second degree in Religious Studies or Theology with extensive research from a recognised University or Theological Institution.

b)A candidate with MPhil in Social Sciences or Humanities background should at least have a B/A degree in Theology or Religious Studies with Second Class Upper Division

c)All candidates will go through a selection interview for purposes of suitability.

6. Department of Sociology and Social Work

MA/MPhil Sociology

Admission Requirements

a)A good first degree in Sociology or Social Work at least Second Class (Lower Division) or better from a recognised University.

b)A Postgraduate Diploma in Humanities from an accredited University with at least two years working experience.

c)For the purposes of assessing applicants’ suitability, all applicants must pass a selection interview.

d)All applicants are admitted into an MA programme. Graduation into MPhil degree would be based on performance to be determined by the Department.

7.Department of History and Political Studies

MPhil – Political Science

The Master of Philosophy in Political Science programme is an advanced two-year (full-time) postgraduate degree. The overarching goal is to train students to become researchers and political analysts. As regards the curriculum and required skills, the programme also prepares students for further training in political science research at the PhD level.

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree with Second Class Lower or better in Political Science, Political Studies, History, Law or Sociology. Other disciplinary backgrounds will be considered. Holders of Second Class Lower degrees may be considered if they have at least two years’ work experience in a professional supervisory position. International applicants must, in general, meet the requirements above and also demonstrate proficiency in English as the medium of classroom instruction. All applications must include transcripts of all post-secondary level education received as well as three letters of recommendation from individuals in professional capacities who are familiar with the applicant’s potential for graduate study. The final requirement for admission is an entry examination and a departmental interview to determine applicants’ likelihood of academic success.

Master of Public Administration (MPA)

The Master of Public Administration programme is a two-year (full-time) postgraduate degree. The overarching goal is to train students to become public administrators and policy analysts.

Admission Requirements for Master of Business Administration (MBA)

a.Candidates for MBA and the Executive MBA must possess a good first degree (minimum of Second Class Lower Division) or equivalent professional qualifications from a recognised institution in any relevant area.

b.Applicants must in addition have a thorough proficiency in written English. Candidates must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the School. An entrance examination may be required when necessary.

Msc Programme

Entry Requirements

a.MSc. applicants must possess good first degrees in a relevant discipline with at least Second Class (Lower Division) or its equivalent.

b.Applicants must in addition have a thorough proficiency in written and spoken English.

Admission into MPhil Programme General requirements for all applicants

The minimum requirements for entry into the research degree study shall be in accordance with the requirement specified and stated on the KNUST website or printed handbook as well as in the Statute and Regulations for research degrees of KNUST.

a.All candidates must possess an Honours Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University or institution of higher learning.

b.All candidates must attend and pass interview sessions conducted by the Departments.

c.All candidates must demonstrate their ability to pay all approved programme fees for the duration of study.

Specific Requirements

Specific requirements for admission to the MPhil programme in Business and Management at KSB are as follows:

MPhil Admission

There shall be two routes to admission to the MPhil programmes.

a.A candidate shall hold Master’s degree in relevant subject areas (e.g., MSc/MA/MBA in Business Administration) from a recognized University or institution of higher learning.

b.For applicants without Master’s degree qualification in relevant Business Administration subject areas:

at the end of the first year must have a minimum CWA of 65% to proceed to MPhil in the second year, else the candidate would be terminating with either Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Science (MSc) in Business Administration.

Specific requirements for admission to the PhD programme in Business and Management at KSB are as follows:

a. Holders of Master’s Degree in relevant subject areas (e.g., MSc/MA/MBA, etc.)

b. MPhil Holders

Candidates who possess MPhil degree qualifications in the relevant subject areas related to business and management (e.g., Accounting, Marketing, Strategic Management, Human Resource Management or Logistics and Supply Chain Management) from a recognized University or institution of higher learning.

ADMISSION INTO DBA PROGRAMME

All candidates must possess an Honours Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University or institution of higher learning.

All candidates must demonstrate their ability to pay all approved programme fees for the duration of study.

Specific Requirements

Specific requirements for admission to the DBA programme at KSB are as follows:

A candidate shall hold Master’s degree in relevant subject areas in business and management (e.g., MSc/MA/MBA in Business Administration) from a recognized University or institution of higher learning.

Must have at least five (5) years of professional experience.

Students who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma (or higher) in Architecture and related fields of study from accredited/government recognized University will be admitted into the programme.

a.Students must demonstrate relevant experiences as well as the capacity for undertaking advanced academic study with at least an Undergraduate and Postgraduate cumulative weighted average in architectural (or related fields) studies of at least 60 percent.

b.Three letters of recommendation from three previous faculties and/or members of the profession.

c.Portfolio of architectural studies (or related fields) works.

d.In addition to these requirements, all applicants must pass an interview by a panel from the Departmental Board.

MSc Architecture (Two Years) Admission Requirements

These programmes are offered to students with architecture background, after obtaining a first undergraduate degree. Admission to these programmes may be preceded by an interview.

MArch (Master of Architecture) – Two Years Admission Requirements

This programme is for students with a first degree in Architecture in any recognised institution. Students are chosen by set criteria based on detailed results at the undergraduate levels.

a.Students must demonstrate relevant experiences as well as the capacity for undertaking advanced academic study with at least an Undergraduate and Postgraduate cumulative weighted average in architectural (or related fields) studies of at least 60 percent.

b.Three letters of recommendation from three previous faculties and/or members of the profession.

c.Portfolio of architectural studies (or related fields) works.

d.In addition to these requirements, all applicants must pass an interview by a panel from the Departmental Board.

PhD (Architecture) – Four Years Admission Requirements

The PhD (Architecture) programme is open to Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Master of Architecture, Master of Science (Architecture), Master of Arts graduates and Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture holders following initial registration of an MPhil, full-time (2 year minimum full-time) or part-time (minimum 3 years); research in the fields of engineering, sciences or humanities with connections to architecture is admissible subject to approval by the Departmental Board. As pertains in KNUST and most Universities in the world, research students will be initially registered on the MPhil, but will transfer and backdate registration based on evidence of good progress and with a supportive recommendation from Supervisor(s) through the Departmental Board.

Additionally, students seeking admission must:

a.Demonstrate sufficient ability and interest to undertake the programme.

b.Attend an interview session and pass the interview before admission.

c.Submit a coherent and sustainable research proposal with workable programme/time table.

Candidates must possess a good degree (a minimum of Second Class Lower) in Land Economy and related subjects from an approved University. Admissions shall be made in accordance with existing University regulations. Priority will be given to candidates with some work experience. Graduates in allied professions, such as planning, geography, development policy, law and the social sciences operating in the areas of land management (for which they have received little or no training) qualify to apply. The programme is geared towards equipping such graduates with the requisite training.

The programme is particularly expected to equip students with the tools to operate in land management; provide the basis for students who may want to pursue their studies to a more advanced level (e.g. the doctoral level) to enable them pursue vocations in the universities and research institutions, to achieve their objective.

The programme is for a period of two years and run at weekends (Saturday and Sunday). The programme is organized in modules with the first year being for course work including eight (8) weeks internship.

PhD Mechanical Engineering Programme

Programme Specialization Options

PhD students are required to specialize in one of the following options:

i.Applied Mechanics

ii.Design and Manufacturing

iii.Thermo-fluids and Energy Systems Engineering.

Admission Requirements

There are two main routes to which an applicant may be enrolled unto the PhD programme in the Department.

Entry Requirements for Regular or direct PhD Programme (Entry via MSc/MPhil Degree)

i.A candidate with a good MSc or MPhil degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from a recognized University.

ii.And a good research proposal with a maximum of one thousand words.

Entry Requirements for Integrated PhD Programme (Entry via BSc Degree)

A candidate with a good first degree, with a minimum of Second Class Upper division in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from a recognized University.

MSc. RETs (Masters in Renewable Energy Technologies)

Admission Requirements

Degree in Engineering or Science from a recognised University with a First Class or Second Class (Upper or Lower) Division.

Some experience in Energy/Renewable Energy Industry.

Tuition

Tuition is by online delivery with limited face to face sessions for examinations and laboratory sessions.

9. Department of Geological Engineering

MSc (Geophysical Engineering)

MPhil/ PhD (Geological Engineering)

The Department offers a full time research programme leading to the award of MPhil or PhD in Geological Engineering. Graduate emphasis is in environmental issues (Groundwater studies), Engineering Geology, Environmental geology (geological hazards studies), Mineral exploration and Mining Environmental Management. All registered graduate students in the Department are required to take relevant courses as prescribed by the Department. Additionally, all graduate students are expected to participate fully in seminars held in the Department and also make presentations showing their progress of work.

Duration of Programme

The MPhil research programme is of two (2) years duration for full-time students whilst the PhD programme is of four (4) years duration for full-time students. Both programmes should be in one of the following areas:

Engineering geology

Mineral Exploration

Hydrogeology

Mining Environmental Management

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to a graduate programme is a good first degree preferably First or Second Class Upper Division in Geological Engineering, Geology or a related field in the Earth Sciences. Candidates with lower division degrees will have to attend and pass an interview prior to admission. All candidates with a first degree are initially registered for MPhil programme.

Candidates who demonstrate an outstanding potential for higher degree research may be recommended to the School of Graduate Studies for a transfer onto a PhD programme after a period of 15 months. Candidates with MPhil in Geological Engineering, Geology or a relevant related field are allowed to register for a direct PhD.

a) MSc Geophysical Engineering

Duration of Programme: Two (2) Calendar Years

Admission Requirements

The following are Admission Requirements for prospective students:

a. Either (i) a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) degree or its equivalent in Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics, Physics, Geology, Earth Science, Agricultural Engineering or any field of specialization relevant to the programme from a recognized University or

(ii) a first degree or its equivalent in Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics, Physics, Geology, Earth Science, Agricultural Engineering or any field of specialization relevant to the programme from a recognized University with at least three (3) years of relevant experience.

b. Applicants with qualifications other than those specified in

(a) above shall be interviewed by an admissions committee and may be required to take a written examination before admission;

c.Applicants with degrees in other engineering/sciences disciplines (e.g. Agricultural Engineering, Agriculture Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, etc.) may be required to take prerequisite courses to make up for deficiencies in undergraduate geological sciences.

d.Applicant whose working language is not English must show proficiency in the English language (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, etc.). Arrangements may be made with the Department of Languages for the acquisition of the necessary English language skills prior to embarking on the programme.

JOINT PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES

The College of Engineering in collaboration with the Ghana Institution of Engineers and the KNUST Business School with the participation of Diaspora alumni wishes to announce its professional /continuing engineering education programmes for the 2016/2017 academic year. The professional programmes are non-traditional, modular and part-time in nature and are designed to improve professional competency and provide management tools for the mid-career engineers transiting into leadership and managerial roles.

For the 2016/2017 academic year, six selected programmes are being offered and applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission to:

At the time of application, applicants should satisfy the following requirements

A.MEng in Oil and Gas with Management (Mid and Downstream)

1.Possess a BSc or B-Tech degree in chemical process and other engineering disciplines from a recognized university;

2.Applicants should have at least four years of post- graduation work experience in the relevant engineering field;

3.Candidates with a First Class or a very good Second Class Upper with minimum of two years of working experience may be considered;

4.Have an active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineers or other related and recognized professional institution.

B.MEng in Industrial Operations with Management

1.Possesses a BSc or B-Tech degree in engineering disciplines from a recognized university;

2.Applicants should have at least four years of post- graduation work experience in the relevant engineering field;

3.Candidates with a First Class or a very good Second

Class Upper with minimum of two years of working experience may be considered;

4.Have an active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineers or other related and recognized professional institution.

C.MEng in Building Services Engineering with Management

1.Possesses a BSc or B-Tech degree in engineering disciplines from a recognized university;

2.Applicants should have at least four years of post- graduation work experience in the relevant engineering field;

3.Candidates with a First Class or a very good Second Class Upper with minimum of two years of working experience may be considered;

4.Have an active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineers or other related and recognized professional institution.

D.MEng Energy Systems Engineering with Management

1.Possesses a BSc or B-Tech degree in mechanical engineering or energy related engineering disciplines from a recognized university;

2.Applicants should have at least four years of post- graduation work experience in the relevant engineering field;

3.Candidates with a First Class or a very good Second Class Upper with minimum of two years of working experience may be considered ;

4.Have an active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineers or other related and recognized professional institution.

E.MEng in Municipal Engineering with Management

1.Applicant must possess a BSc or B-Tech degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental, Sanitary and Municipal engineering or Building Technology from a recognized university;

2.Applicants should have at least four years of post- graduation work experience in the relevant engineering field;

3.Candidates with a First Class or a very good Second Class Upper with minimum of two years of working experience may be considered;

4. Have an active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institution of Engineers or other related and recognized professional institution.

Applicants may have to pass a selection interview to be admitted into the programme.

F. MEng in Information and Communication Technology with Management.

Candidates are admitted into the programme unconditionally if they satisfy the following requirements:

1.Applicants must possess a BSc or BTech degree in Computer, Electrical or Telecommunication Engineering from a recognized University;

2.Have at least four years of post-graduation work experience in an engineering or engineering related field;

3.Have an active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institute of Engineers or other related and recognized professional Institution.

4.Passed a Selection Interview.

Candidates are admitted into the programme conditionally if they satisfy the following requirements:

1.Possess a higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer, Electrical or Telecommunication Engineering from a recognized Institution;

2.Students who possess an HND must have at least Five

(5) years of relevant post-graduation work experience.

3.Have and active membership or associate membership of the Ghana Institute of Engineers or other related and recognized professional institution.

4.Passes a Selection Interview.

Students admitted conditionally must successfully complete prescribed bridging courses before continuing to the graduate courses.

Duration of Programme

The professional programmes are modular and the modules will be run in the evenings or at weekends. The programme will cover two (2) academic years for full-time students and three (3) years for part-time students.
