What Is Lube?

Lube, also known as personal lubricant, is a body-safe, liquid-like gel that helps reduce friction and discomfort during sex. While most people think of it as an aid for penetrative sex, it also makes masturbation, manual, oral, and all other types of sex easier.

WHAT IS LUBE USED FOR?

Lube’s main role is exactly what it says on the tin: to lubricate. You can also use it for penetrative sex, manual sex using your hands or a sex toy, masturbation, and oral sex, explains Goncalves. “It will help to reduce the likelihood of associated complications. Without lubrication, any friction that arises during sexual activities can create small tears and cuts in the skin, as well as general irritation which can lead to infections.”

Why Use Lube?

For women, vaginal lubrication is an important part of sexual arousal. It readies the vagina for penetration, making it easier for the penis to enter and reducing any accompanying friction or irritation. Pain during intercourse is often caused by inadequate lubrication.

How Lube Works?

Lube works by reducing friction during sex, making vaginal and anal penetration and masturbation (either alone or with a partner) easier, more enjoyable, and less likely to cause irritation. Though once considered a product for women in menopause to counter vaginal dryness resulting from decreased levels of estrogen, lube has become widely accepted and encouraged for sexual use at all ages.

Types Of Lube?

  • Water-based lubes are lightweight, versatile, and compatible with all sex toys and condoms, but they don’t perform equally and many contain unsafe ingredients namely glycerin.
  • Silicone-based lubricants have a silky smooth texture and last for what feels like forever. This type of lube works with all condom types and is waterproof and hypoallergenic, although it cannot be used with sex toys made from silicone.
  • Oil-based lubricants are very moisturizing, waterproof, and last as well as silicone lubes do, but they cannot be used with STI or pregnancy barriers made from latex or polyisoprene including condoms, diaphragms, or dental dams because the oil will degrade their material, rendering them ineffective.

Is Lube Safe?

In general, lube is considered a low-risk product. However, there is research to suggest lube with high osmolality (the concentration of particles and minerals in a liquid) might damage the top layer of vaginal and anal tissues. Any time tissue is torn or damaged during sex, the risk of transmission of a sexually transmitted infection (STIs), including HIV, increases.
