University of Ghana Medical School Elective Programmes

Elective Programmes

  1. Clerkships are usually held in any of the following departments of interest to the applicants: Medicine, Microbiology, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Anaesthesia, Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Surgery, Radiology, Psychiatry, Community Health
  2. Visiting students should have completed at least one year of clinical study in their own medical school and should have sufficient command of the English Language to enable them to understand verbal and written instructions.
  3. The success of student’s application will depend, on whether the Heads of relevant departments are willing to accept such applicants.
  4. The School has no funds available to assist students.  Mentorship fees are chargeable for elective programmes, which form part of the requirements for acceptance of the applicant.
  5. Limited accommodation is available (paired rooms) at the International Students Hostel. The current charge of accommodation is US$10.00 per day per student.  Meals are available at the canteens and restaurants on campus. Foreign students are required by University Policy to make full payment of their fees in US Dollars.
  6. A non-refundable administrative/registration fee of US$100 and mentorship fee is payable by a successful applicant upon arrival in the School at the Cash Office, Administration Block.
  7. Let me have your application accompanied by a recommendation from your Dean.
  8. Malpractice/liability insurance:
    You will not be covered for malpractice insurance by the University of Ghana Medical School.  You need your own personal medical insurance.
  9. No application can be considered unless it is accompanied by a recommendation from the Dean or other responsible authority of your own Medical School.

1. Ordinary Electives`
This is for students who want to experience conditions prevailing in countries other than their own.  It is not required for their graduation.

2. Exchange Electives

This is organised under the IFMSA*.  It will not exceed 4 weeks and mentorship is free.

3. Attachment Elective

Where an official report is required and it is also part of the foreign students’ requirement for graduation.
This kind of elective is up to 10 weeks or more.

The current mentorship fee for elective is USD 45.00 per week.

NOTE:
The School has limited accommodation for Elective Students (paired rooms) at its International students’ Hostel.  The rate for accommodation is 10 US Dollars per day per student. For reservation, contact Warden (0200470077)  to confirm 2 weeks before arrival.
