Sports coaching can be defined as the process of motivating, guiding and training an individual in preparation for any sporting hobby, career, or event. Most professional sportspeople have coaches to help them train and compete – but you don’t have to be a pro to hire a coach.

Entry Requirements

Direct Applicants

  • WASSCE Candidates

i) Must have Credit Passes (A1-C6) in five subjects comprising two core subjects, English Language and Maths (minimum grade of D7 or better), plus

ii) Credit passes (A1-C7) in three (3) elective subjects

  • SSSCE Candidates

i) Credit passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language, Maths and Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus

ii) Credit passes in two (2) elective subjects.

  • Mature Applicants
  • Must be at least 25 years by 1st August of the year of application
  • Must hold:

Teachers Certificate ‘A’ or Post-Secondary Certificate ‘A’

SSSCE/WASSCE with passes in English Language and Mathematics or Certificate of professional training from a recognised institution.

What qualifications are needed for sports coaching?

To become a sports coach, you will need to have a coaching qualification that is recognised by the governing body for your sport.

If you’re interested in taking a higher education qualification in sports science it would be helpful to take a science-related subject at A level.
