Records from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has revealed that a total of 18,961 marriages were registered under the Marriage Ordinance from 2017 to 2018.

Out of the number, 9986 marriages were registered in 2017 while the year 2018 recorded 8987 marriages, representing a decrease of 10.004 per cent.

According to the records, a total of 2376 and 2355 marriages were also conducted under the Marriage Ordinance for the year 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Head of Marriage Unit at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Francis Akanni, who disclosed this in Accra on Tuesday said his outfit also registered 745 Customary marriages in 2017 and 916 for 2018 adding that, a total of 233 and 202 customary marriages were also dissolved in 2018 and 2017 respectively.

He explained that, October 2018 saw a total of 1153 registered marriages being the highest adding that out of the 916 customary marriages conducted in 2017 the month of May saw 27 dissolutions being the highest.

Mr Akanni noted that, the three types of valid marriage recognized under the laws of Ghana include marriage under the Marriage Ordinance, customary marriage and the Islamic or Mohammedans marriage.

He pointed out that, to obtain a marriage certificate under the ordinance marriage the applicant must first fill a Notice of Marriage form where he or she would be required to provide details such as names, ages, occupations and addresses of both parties as well as copies of valid identification.

“After filling the forms, you are required to return after 21 days, during which banns will be published on a notice board indicating yours and your partner’s intention to marry. If there is no opposition after the 21 days, you will be asked to pick up your approved marriage license, “he said.

He said GH¢ 85 was charged as 21-days notification fee with an additional GH¢ 180 for the issuance of a marriage certificate.

Mr Akanni further disclosed that, the Assembly currently has a 300 seater conference room, 60 and 30 seater conference rooms, and a garden at the city hall where marriage ceremonies could be officiated and urged would-be couples to approach the Assembly if they want to use the facility.
