Apply In-Person:
The initial process of applying for permanent residency starts with the Ghana Immigration Service ( GIS) offices (Headquarters) and a report submitted to the Hon. Minister for the Interior for approval.

Step 1: Visit the GIS headquarters offices to start the application

  • The applicant should pick the application forms for a permanent resident permit from Ghana Immigration Service headquarters as well as regional offices across the country. The issuing officer at the immigration offices will take you through the process.
  • You will first be given an application form to complete.

Step 2: Complete and submit the application form

  • Fill the application form up to the end and attach together with the required documents for the application.
  • You will be required to attach the following with your application.

Attach two(2) recent passport pictures

Copy of Non-Citizen ID Card/ Original Passport of employee

Approved work permit/Automatic Quota

Current Company Tax Clearance Certificate (for existing companies)

Letter of support from two high-ranking Ghanaians (where applicable)

Police Clearance Report from home country

Medical Report

Offer letter/Appointment letter

Letter from Ghanaian spouse ( where applicable)

Curriculum Vitae of applicant.

Marriage Certificate (in case applicant is married to a Ghanaian)

Proof of property ownership in Ghana ( where applicable)

Proof of economic contribution to the country (bank statements, employment records etc.)

Step 3: Payment of application fees and submission of application for approval

  • One should proceed to pay the applicable application fees for the application and attach the proof of payment receipt to the application before submission.
  • After payment, proceed to submit the application together with the required documents to the immigration officer in the GIS offices.
  • The immigration officer will forward the application to the assessment committee for further verification.

Step 4: Review and approval of the application

  • When the committee receives the application, they will review, examine and assess documents to ensure that all requirements have been met and that all the submitted documents are true copies.
  • In this case therefore, if not contented, the committee may request the applicant for addition information and additional documents, the applicant may be invited for an interview or the committee may carry out an investigation about the applicant.
  • On approval, the immigration committee will arrange for an approval recommendation and forward it to the director of immigration.

Step 5: Issuance of certificate of permanent residence

  • The Director upon receiving recommendations from the Committee issues the Certificate of Permanent Residence to the approved applicant.
  • This processes usually takes a period of two to four weeks to complete.
