Most modern photocopiers use a technology called xerography, a dry process that uses electrostatic charges on a light-sensitive photoreceptor to first attract and then transfer toner particles (a powder) onto paper in the form of an image. The toner is then fused onto the paper using heat, pressure, or a combination of both. Copiers can also use other technologies, such as inkjet, but xerography is standard for office copying.
How Photocopy Machines Work?
Xerography is a dry process that uses electrostatic charges on a light-sensitive photoreceptor to collect and then transfer toner particles (a powder) onto paper in the shape of an image in most current photocopiers. In most cases, a selenium-coated aluminum drum is used in xerography. Light reflected from the surface of the document to be copied reaches the selenium surface, where negatively charged ink particles (i.e., toner) are sprayed, generating an image of the page on the drum. A sheet of copy paper is moved close to the drum, and the negatively charged ink particles are attracted by a positive electric charge under the sheet, thus the image is being transferred to the copy paper. The ink particles are then fused to the paper with a brief burst of heat.
