What Is Cefixime?
Cefixime, sold under the brand name Suprax among others, is an antibiotic medication used to treat a number of bacterial infections. These infections include otitis media, strep throat, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and Lyme disease. For gonorrhea typically only one dose is required.
What Is Cefixime Used For?
Cefixime is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It belongs to the class of medicines known as cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections.

Yes. Cefixime is generally a strong antibiotic as it is used actively against a broad category of bacteria.
Who Should Not Take Cefixime?
You should not take cefixime if you are allergic to cefixime, or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceftin, Cefzil, Keflex, Omnicef, and others. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillins.
Before taking cefixime:
Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking cefixime it is important that your doctor knows:
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine. It is particularly important that you tell your doctor if you have had a bad reaction to a penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic.
- If you have any problems with the way your kidneys work.
- If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding. (Although cefixime is not known to be harmful to babies, it is still important that you tell your doctor if you are expecting or breastfeeding a baby.)
- If you are taking or using any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines.
How should I take cefixime:
Follow all directions on your cefixime label. Do not take cefixime in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
You may take cefixime with or without food.
The cefixime chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.
Shake the oral cefixime suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Cefixime can cause unusual results with certain lab tests for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are taking this medication.
Use cefixime for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Cefixime will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
How Effective Is Cefixime?
The cure rate was 98% (90/97 patients in cefixime 800 mg orally) compared with 95.6% (amoxicillin and probenecid group).
How Many Days Should I Take Cefixime?
The capsule and tablet may be administered without regard to food. In the treatment of infections due to Streptococcus pyogenes, a therapeutic dosage of cefixime should be administered for at least 10 days.
How Long Does Cefixime Stay In Your System?
The half-life is about 3 to 4 hours and is not dose dependent. Cefixime is excreted by renal and biliary mechanisms. About 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours.
