STU Bachelor BSc Technology (BTech) Civil Engineering Entry Requirements

The programme targets the following group of graduates:

  • SSSCE/WASSCE graduates
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE)
  • Technical School graduates with NABPTEX Certificate Examination (Certificate II)
  • HND holders
  • International or Foreign Applicants
  • Construction Technicians (CTC Part II and Part III)
  • Technical Professionals who are presently working
  • Matured applicant in the field of Civil Engineering

Admission Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the B. Tech Degree in Civil Engineering Programme must possess one of the following categories of qualifications:a. Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)

  1. At least credit passes (A – D) in English, Mathematics and Science (Integrated/ Core Science)
  2. Also, at least credit passes (A – D) in any three of the following elective subjects: Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography and Technical Drawing.  The cumulative aggregate must be 24 or better.

West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

  1. At least credit passes (A1 – C6) in English, Mathematics and Science (Integrated/ Core Science) in addition to
  2. At least credit passes (A1 – C6) in any three of the following elective subjects: Engineering Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Technical Drawing. The cumulative aggregate must be 36 or better.

c. NABPTEX Certificate Examination (Certificate II)

Passes in all elective subjects and passes in three core subjects (English, Mathematics and Science (Integrated/ Core Science)


General Certificate of Education (GCE)

  1. Advanced Level:  Passes in two subjects in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.
  2. Five credit passes at ‘O’ Level including English and Mathematics, and Technical Drawing.

HND applicants

Applicants with HND in Civil Engineering (second class lower or better) will start at level 300.

Technician Certificate

Applicants must have acquired Part 3 or part 2 in Construction certificate of London City & Guilds/Ghana Education Service and the applicants must have acquired a one-year post CTC III  or two-year post CTC II qualification working experience in a recognized civil engineering firm or related industry at the time of submitting the application forms. CTC III and CTC II applicants must undergo a one semester and two semesters bridging programme respectively, that covers all the prevailing first-year courses of the HND in Civil Engineering and pass all the bridging courses with an average score of at least 50%. After successful completion of the bridge programme, applicants will start at level 300 after the bridging programme.

Mature applicants

Applicants may be considered on mature student’s status if they satisfy the following three criteria:

Passes in Construction Technician Part II

OR

Passes (GCE ‘O’ Level, SSSCE or WASSCE) in any two of the following:

Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Technical Drawing,

  1. Must be at least 25 years old and show proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth, which is at least five (5) years old at the time of application.
  2. Must have at least two years’ experience in a related field.

h. Foreign Applicants

  1. Required subjects for Sciences: English, Mathematics, Biology/Agriculture, Physics and Chemistry, Further Mathematics and a pass in one arts subject. Passes with equivalencies of WASSCE or SSSCE shall be required.
  2. Other Qualifications: Other qualifications acceptable for consideration for admission include International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE, GCSE, American Grade13 examinations and other external qualifications, which have equivalences to the WASSCE/SSSCE and the GCE (A Levels).

International students whose first language is not English are required to have one of the following English Language qualifications before they can register on the programme:

  • IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.0 in any element)
  • TOEFL paper-based 550 (no less than 4.0 in TWE)
  • TOEFL IBT 79 (no less than 17 in any element)

However, applicants from English speaking countries may have these requirements waived.

The equivalencies of such foreign qualifications will always have to be determined and certified by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).


NOTE

All qualified applicants are expected to start the programme in the first year except for applicants with HND, CTC 3 or CTC 2 who will start at level 300 or 200 respectively, as the case may apply.
