What Is LCD TV?

Liquid Crystal Display TV

A Liquid-Crystal Display Is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals combined with polarizers. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly but instead use a backlight or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome.

LCD panels are made of two layers of a glass-like material, which are polarized and glued together. One of the layers is coated with a special polymer that holds the individual liquid crystals. Electric current is passed through the individual crystals, which allows the crystals to pass or block light to create images.

LCD crystals do not produce light. An external light source, such as fluorescent or LED light bulbs, is needed for the image created by the LCD to become visible to the viewer.

LCD TVs can be made very thin, allowing them to be hung on a wall or placed on a small stand on top of a table, desk, dresser, or cabinet.

An LCD display uses either a passive matrix or an active matrix display grid. The active matrix LCD is also known as a thin film transistor (TFT) display. The passive matrix LCD has a grid of conductors with pixels located at each intersection in the grid. A current is sent across two conductors on the grid to control the light for any pixel. An active matrix has a transistor located at each pixel intersection, requiring less current to control the luminance of a pixel. For this reason, the current in an active matrix display can be switched on and off more frequently, which improves the refresh rate.

LCDs are available to display arbitrary images (as in a general-purpose computer display) or fixed images with low information content, which can be displayed or hidden. For instance: preset words, digits, and seven-segment displays, as in a digital clock, are all good examples of devices with these displays. They use the same basic technology, except that arbitrary images are made from a matrix of small pixels, while other displays have larger elements.

Types Of LCD TVS?

LCD screens can be grouped into three categories: TN (twisted nematic), IPS (in-plane switching), and VA (Vertical Alignment). Each of these screen types has its own unique qualities, almost all of them having to do with how images appear across the various screen types.

How Long Do LCD TVs Last?

LCDs have a lifespan of about 50,000 hours, or 5 years — half the lifespan of LED.

 Advantages of Liquid-Crystal Displays (LCDs):

  • Energy Efficient. LCDs are known for their energy-efficient properties.
  • Long-Lasting. Another advantage of LCDs is their ability to last for a very long time.
  • LED Backlighting.
  • No Screen Burn-In.
  • Supports Small and Low-Profile Sizes.
