Postgraduate Study in our Department

The department offers an MPhil programme in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology.  This is a unique two-year programme that combines research with taught courses in Gross, Microscopic and Developmental Anatomy, Cell Biology, Cytogenetics, Molecular Biology, Neuroanatomy, and Anatomical Techniques employed in the preservation and preparation of human material for teaching and research. The programme has a strong practical component supplemented by lectures, small group discussions and tutorials.  The MPhil in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology has been developed to provide postgraduate training in human anatomy and is intended for students graduating from biomedical science and related disciplines who wish to extend their knowledge of anatomy and/or who wish to pursue a career in the anatomical sciences. The primary aim of the programme is to educate and train individuals in human anatomy. The programme is delivered using a combination of traditional methods and guided self-directed learning in which students use and develop transferable and subject-specific skills.

The programme fulfils the requirements of a higher degree by ensuring that the students possess autonomy early in their studies to maximise their interests and develop new skills. The programme has been designed to provide a framework within which students can study by considering the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. It is an attractive option for individuals wishing to improve their knowledge and practical skills in human anatomy, particularly with a view to pursuing an academic career in anatomy. Graduates from this programme will be encouraged to undertake further study in the anatomical sciences.  The Department is also part of an interdisciplinary research team for training postgraduate students in the fields of Reproductive Biology, Reproductive Health, Morphology and Toxicology, Developmental Biology and Cell Biology.  These integrated programmes lead to either an Mphil or a PhD which offers excellent employment opportunities.  Our strategy for continued success is to provide a stimulating environment in which individual scientists can thrive in a well-equipped and modern research community.

PhD in Human Anatomy and Cell Biology

The PhD comprises a taught course followed by a three-year research component.  Progression to the research component is contingent on passing the taught course component.  Projects for the PhD programme may be chosen from any of those currently available in the department, after consultation with the relevant member of staff.  Alternatively, candidates may choose to consult with staff to determine the projects to be pursued in the following year/discuss their research interests. Students considering postgraduate training in this department are encouraged to identify their area of interest and make direct contact with the academic staff to discuss project availability.  The research component begins with an induction programme to provide the framework around which the research training is formulated.

MSc Mortuary Science and Management

Mortuary Science and Management is a unique one calendar year programme that combines the study of behavioural, physical, and applied sciences with the intent of preparing graduates for careers as knowledgeable, skilled, and innovative as funeral service professionals.   Graduates of this programme will be able to serve the bereaved in a manner that is competent, dignified, and caring. Graduates will offer support to the bereaved, prepare the body of the deceased for final disposition according to the survivors’ and/or deceased’s wishes, manage and secure legal documentation, manage all mortuary business operations, counsel survivors about the options available to them and assist survivors adapt to changes in their lives subsequent to a death, by providing counselling and support.

MSc Postgraduate Taught Courses (opportunities starting in 2012)

We offer one calendar year postgraduate taught courses in Forensic Science and Toxicology and Morphological Diagnostics.  There is a great demand for biomedical scientists trained in the knowledge base and skills that form the basis of these degree programmes with employment opportunities in the Police Service, Standards Board, and Academia.  These courses begin with a two-week multi-disciplinary practical training programme, which aims to revise and update fundamental practical techniques and introduce advanced research methods. The emphasis is on stimulating research across disciplines by raising awareness of the opportunities afforded by complementary technologies. The introductory programme is followed by Non-laboratory based training for all postgraduate students in the Department on the following:

Entry Requirements

First or Second Class (Upper Division) Honours degree in a Biomedical Science Subject.
