usher or usherette job

Who are they and what do they do? The usher or usherette works in a theatre, cinema, sports stadium, bullfight arena, etc. and is in charge of guiding the spectators to their assigned seats.

What are the activities of the job? Indicates to the public attending the different events where their seats are. May also be in charge of keeping order during the show; reviews the seats and boxes after each session so that they are not in a bad state for the following event and checks whether anybody has left any belongings. S/he may also hand out brochures or information sheets about the performance or sell programmes or snacks and drinks in any interval.

Where is it done and under what conditions? The work involves unsocial hours, working while others are not, and is dependent on the program of performances.

What tools/equipment do they use?  Usually also wears a uniform.

What do you need to succeed? There is no specific level of education required to be an usher or usherette but interest in, and understanding of, the type of performance is useful. Career progression can be towards jobs such as operator of the cinema projector, or front of house manager or security.
