HISTORY

Wiawso college of Education traces its origin to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, where it was known as Wiawso Body Corporate Training College. The college was formally opened with 29 pioneer male students and 3 tutors on February 13, 1952, the tutors were Mr. J. T. N. Yankah, the acting Principal, and Mr. B. A Quarcoo, the Senior Housemaster, Mr. E. O. Nortey, a tutor and Mr. R.S.A Kwarteng, the College Clerk.

In September 1964, the then Minister of Education directed that the college, then known as Wiawso Anglican Training College, be moved to its completed permanent buildings at Sefwi Wiawso. The re-housed Wiawso Training College, according to the minister, was to continue to be under the management of the Anglican Church; however a new board of Governors was to be constituted with membership based at Wiawso. The first batch of thirty-two (32) female students, were admitted in September 1974.

Since its establishment, the College has maintained its original purpose of providing initial teacher training courses for its students. Beginning from 2004/2005 academic year, the College has offered a three-year Diploma in Basic Education programme with emphasis on Science, Mathematics and Technical Education. Wiawso College of Education is a mixed boarding institution firmly rooted in its motto: CORDI MANUI ET CAPITI, a Latin phrase which means “with heart, hands, and head”

The fundamental aim of the college, therefore, has always been the production of intelligent and dynamic teachers with high moral fibre. The college does not only train teachers to go and teach, but it also encourages teachers to accept postings into rural and deprived areas. This is currently done through the eight months out programme that offers student teachers the opportunity to experience rural living situations. The College runs Sandwich programme in Diploma for untrained teachers (UTDBE) who are currently teaching in the basic schools
