Humanitarian assistance is intended to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain human dignity during and after man-made crises and disasters caused by natural hazards, as well as to prevent and strengthen preparedness for when such situations occur.

What are humanitarian problems?

Humanitarian crises can either be natural disasters, man-made disasters or complex emergencies.

Examples of humanitarian crises include armed conflicts, epidemics, famine, natural disasters and other major emergencies.

If such a crisis causes large movements of people it could also become a refugee crisis.
