Mechanical Engineering

The Department runs a 4-Year Bachelor of Science Degree programme in Mechanical Engineering. The programme is composed of taught courses, seminars, fieldtrips, report writing, laboratory and workshop practices. There is also a major project work supervised by the academic staff making up an overall total of 134 credits. The taught courses are assessed largely through quizzes, class test, homework and an end of semester examination. The aim of the department is to provide a broad-based education and training in Mechanical Engineering Sciences and their applications that will enable graduates to meet the challenges of the engineering profession in Ghana and elsewhere. Graduates of the department will be equipped with the skill to design, manufacture and assemble mechanical components and systems; solve engineering problem by analysis and empirical methods, including application of the computer. Graduates will also be able to install, operate, maintain and service plant/machinery, tools and equipment. They will also prepare and read engineering drawings, prepare and present engineering reports and apply relevant social science principles to manage engineering organizations and maintain cordial human relations.

The department is manned by competent academic staff with specialities in the fields of Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Heat Transfer, Solid Mechanics, Machine Design and Production Engineering. Individual lecturers are heavily involved in research in their respective fields and have publications to this effect. The department currently runs a 3-year training programme for selected mining companies.

Candidates wishing to pursue engineering programme will always find our department the preferred choice. The department has devoted lecturers who are ready to help students on one-on-one basis. Each course runs with a well prepared lecture notes for each student. Library facilities are also available to be accessed. With state of the art laboratories and strong contact with industry that enables industrial attachments and fieldtrips, students are always able to relate the practical with theory for effective understanding for a successful career.

Circuit laws. Circuit theorems. Electrostatics. Electromagnetics. Magnetic circuits. Inductance. Alternating voltage and current. Signal waveforms. Introduction to transformers, DC Machines, Induction Machines and Synchronous Machines.

MC 155 Engineering Drawing I (2, 2, 3)
Lettering with inclined and vertical strokes. Word spacing and compositions. Construction of lines, angles, regular polygons and general loci. First and third angle orthogonal projections. Dimensioning, limits, fits and tolerance.

MC 157 Communication Skills I (2, 1, 2)

MC 156 Engineering Drawing II (1, 4, 3)
Using CAD Software to do the following: Sectional views and standard conventions of sectional views. Curves of intersection of various planes and solids. Development of various solids like cylinders and spheres. Assembly drawings from both exploded views and working drawing views.

MC 158 Communication Skills II (2, 1, 2)
Supporting and developing sentences. Forms of discourse. Induction and deductive reasoning, registers and editing. The use of footnotes, references, newspapers and journals. Plagiarism.

MC 265 Differential Equations (2, 2, 3)
Ordinary differential equations. First Order equations. Second Order equations with constant coefficients. Laplace Transforms and their application to solution of ordinary differential equations. Series solution of Ordinary Differential equations. Legendre Polynomials.

MC 267 Thermodynamics (2, 2, 3)
Fundamental concepts. Zeroth, first and second laws of thermodynamics. Application to simple compressible substances. Introduction to gas power cycles.Vapour power cycles and introduction to steam plant. Reciprocating expanders and compressors. Theory of mixtures. Introduction to reciprocating IC engines.

MC 271 Workshop Technology (2, 1, 2)
Basic manufacturing processes. Metrology. Properties and uses of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Alloys and plastics. Foundry practice. Welding, hot and cold working.

MC 273 Mechanics of Machines I (2, 2, 3)
Introduction to standard mechanism, including cams, links, gears, etc. Graphical and analytical treatments of the kinematics of common link mechanisms. Vehicle motion, brakes, clutches, epicycle and gearing. Elementary vibrations and analogues.

MC 275 Elements of Mining and Mineral Processing (2, 1, 2)
Stoping methods and support systems. Equipment selection. Selective mining. Layout of stoping methods. Classification of excavation, loading and hauling methods and equipment. Types of open pit working faces and cuts. Determination of productivity and output of excavation, loading and hauling equipment. Introduction to land reclamation. Convergence of series; Power series, Taylor’s and Maclaurim’s series. Fourier series and Integrals. Multiple Integrals. Double and triple integrals. Line, surface and volume integrals. Green’s theorem. Gamma and Beta functions. Partial differential equations. The Wave Equation. The Heat Conduction Equation and the Laplace’s Equation. Solutions by separation of variables.

MC 262 Computer Applications (1, 3, 2)
Application of AUTOCAD software to the solution of design problems from Machine Design I, II and III. Application of FORTRAN/PASCAL to the solution of graded problems from simple machine elements to more complicated machine systems.

MC 264 Fluid Mechanics (2, 2, 3)
Properties of fluids: statics and kinematics of fluids. Euler’s equation, Bernoulli’s equation and applications. Dynamics of fluid flow. Turbulent and laminar flow. Flow in pipes. Friction and other losses. Open channel flow. Navier-Stokes Equation: Simple solutions. Dimensionless analysis.

MC 270 Fieldtrip and Technical Report Writing I (0, 4, 1)
Field trips to areas of interest. Students will be expected to present reports upon which they will be assessed for their credits.

MC 272 Metallurgy (2, 1, 2)
Practical study of selected materials. Heat treatment of steel and cast irons. Surface hardening methods. Alloy steels. Corrosion and corrosion controls.

MC 274 Machine Design I (2, 2, 3)
Basic principles of design. Approach to design problems. Requirements of good design. Formulation of design criteria for design problems. Engineering materials and their relevant properties. Fabrication methods. Stress calculations in design. Static and fatigue stresses. Stress concentration. Notch effect. The use of theories of failure. Safety factor approach to design. MC 352 Public Relations (2, 1, 2)
Meaning, nature and scope of Public Relations (PR) as exhibited by its definition and distinction from other forms of communication. Planning PR programmes. The role PR plays in organisations and as to whether to set up a PR department or depend on the services of a PR consultant. Media and Press Relations. Case studies.

MC 358 Heat Transfer (2, 2, 3)
Conduction; steady and unsteady state. Convection; laminar and turbulent flow over plate and in tubes. Radiation; ideal and non ideal bodies, gases. Introduction to mass transfer.

MC 372 Workshop Practice (1, 4, 2)
Extensive practicals on topics treated in MC 271 and MC 373. Servicing and repair of machinery such as pumps, engines and vehicles.

MC 374 Machine Design III (2, 2, 3)
Advanced treatment of gears and gearing: involute gears, helical gears, bevel gears and worm gears. Gears failure and lubrication. Design of hydrostatic torque transmission systems. Performance and selection of hydrodynamic couplings and torque convertors. Design of machine for production. Computer Aided Design (CAD), Product development.

MC 376 Electrical Machines (2, 2, 3)
DC & AC winders. Speed control of Winders. Electrical braking system. Safety circuit and protective devices. Conveyor systems. Mine communication. 3-phase AC theory. Transformers. DC Machines. Induction (AC) machines. Synchronous (DC) machines. Tariffs.

MC 378 Internal Combustion Engines (2, 2, 3)
Fuels and combustion. Air standard cycles. SI and CI engine characteristics. Criteria of performance. Gas turbines and their application.

YEAR FOUR SEMESTER ONE

MC 451 Economic development and Planning (2, 2, 3)
Theory and concepts of development. Foreign aid, grants and investment. Techniques of economic development planning. Third world and economic development planning with particular emphasis to Ghana.

MC 457 Law of Contract and Tort (2, 0, 2)
Law and legal system, Contract and conditions for valid contracts. Contracts and business organisations. Abrogation of contracts.

MC 459 Operations Research (2, 2, 3)
Application of the following operations research techniques in solving relevant problems: Linear and integer programming. Assignment and transportation problems. Decision analysis. Project scheduling methods: CPM, PERT. Simulation techniques. Application of appropriate computer software.

MC 461 Principles of Economics (2, 0, 2)
Introduction to microeconomics. Demand and supply and price theory. Elasticities. Economies of scale. Optimal input combinations and cost functions. Perfect competition, monopoly, imperfect competition (monopolistic competition, oligopoly, cartel, etc). business organization and securities. Introduction to macroeconomics. Functions of government. Measurement of national output and income. Money and banking. Unemployment and inflation.

MC 471 Refrigeration and Air conditioning 2,2, 3)
Reverse carnot cycle. Fundamentals of vapour compression refrigeration. Application to air conditioning and food storage. Refrigeration and air-conditioning systems component, Absorption refrigeration.

MC 473 Machine Design IV (1, 4, 3)
Practical design problems covering topics treated in the course of machine Design I, II and III. Tackling of comprehensive design projects. Exercises in the design and development of Mine Machinery Application of CAD to the design of Mine Machinery.

YEAR FOUR SEMESTER TWO

Selected Project Work under the supervision of an academic Senior Member.

MR 452 Colloquium/Seminar (1, 4, 2)
Student will prepare a paper on a selected topic and present it in seminar under supervision.

Forms of Business organization. Management of business enterprises. Budget preparation process. Management of working capital. Investment in assets.

MC 460 Instrumentation and Control (2, 2, 3)
General Introduction to the science of measurement. Introduction to strain gauges. Advanced strain gauge system. General discussion on open and closed loops. Translation elements and block diagrams. Types of systems response. The theory and practice of control technology. General comments on other types of controllers.

MC 462 Industrial and Maintenance Engineering (2, 2, 3)
Method and time study. Productivity improvement and total quality management.
Computer in quality control. Fundamental concepts. Types of maintenance programmes. facilities and supporting services. Practical: Servicing and repair of pumps, instruments and equipment, valves, engines, vehicles and steam plant components.
