STU Bachelor BSc Electrical and Electronics Engineering Entry Requirements

The programme targets the following group of graduates:

  • SSSCE/WASSCE graduates
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE)
  • Technical School graduates with NABPTEX Certificate Examination (Certificate II)
  • HND holders
  • International or Foreign Applicants
  • Electrical Technicians ( Part EET II and EET Part III)
  • Technical Professionals who are presently working
  • Matured applicant in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Applicants seeking admission into the B.Tech Degree in the proposed Electrical and Electronics Engineering Programme must possess one of the following categories of qualifications:


Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE)

Graduates with at least credit passes (A-D) in Core English, Core Mathematics,   Integrated Science, Elective Mathematics, and any two of the following: Physics, Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity and Chemistry can apply. 


West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 

Graduates with at least credit pass (A1-C6) in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, Elective Mathematics, and any two of the following: Physics, Technical Drawing, Applied Electricity and Chemistry can apply.

NABPTEX Certificate Examination (Certificate II)

Passes in all elective subjects and passes in three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Science (Integrated/ Core Science).

General Certificate of Education (GCE)

Applicants who hold two (2) GCE ‘A’ level passes in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry     and a pass in General Paper, plus five (5) GCE ‘O’ level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and General Science or Chemistry can apply.


HND applicants

Holders of HND Electrical and Electronics Engineering with at least Second-Class Lower Division in a relevant field will join the programme at Level 300 (third year).

Technician Certificate

Applicants must have acquired Part 3 or part 2 in Electrical and Electronics certificate of London City & Ghana Education Service (Technical Examination Unit) and the applicants must have acquired a one-year post EET III  or two-year post EET II qualification working experience in a recognized civil engineering firm or related industry at the time of submitting the application forms. EET III and EET II applicants must undergo a one semester and two semesters bridging programme respectively, that covers all the prevailing first-year courses of the HND in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and pass all the bridging courses with an average score of at least 50%. After successful completion of the bridge programme, applicants will start at level 300 after the bridging programme.

Mature applicants

  • Applicants who are 25 years or above (and show proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth, which is at least five (5) years old at the time of application) with a minimum of two (2) years working experience in a relevant power, telecommunication and allied engineering field can apply.
  • Applicants who are 25 years or above (and show proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth, which is at least five (5) year old at the time of application) with a minimum of 2 years work experience in a relevant power, telecommunication and allied engineering field, plus a certificate in any of the following programmes can apply:
  1. Electrical Installation Work (Old Scheme)
  2. Electrical Works NVTI (Grade I and II)
  3. Electrical Works (TVET)
  4. Electrical Installation Works (City and Guilds of London)

Additionally, a pass in a written examination and a selection interview to be conducted by the university is required to determine the acceptance of a mature applicant.


Foreign Applicants  

  • Required subjects for Sciences: English, Mathematics, Biology/Agriculture, Physics and Chemistry, Further Mathematics and a pass in one arts subject. At least passes with equivalencies of WASSCE or SSSCE shall be required.
  • Other Qualifications: Other qualifications acceptable for consideration for admission include International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE, GCSE, American Grade13 examinations and other external qualifications, which have equivalences to the WASSCE/SSSCE and the GCE (A Levels).

International students whose first language is not English are required to have one of the following English Language qualifications before they can register on the programme:

  • IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.0 in any element)
  • TOEFL paper-based 550 (no less than 4.0 in TWE)
  • TOEFL IBT 79 (no less than 17 in any element)

However, applicants from English speaking countries may have these requirements waived.

The equivalencies of such foreign qualifications will always have to be determined and certified by the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
