Management of Accra Technical University (ATU) Orients 2017 New SRC Executives ahead of Task
Management of the Accra Technical University, ATU has organized a two day orientation exercise for the newly elected executives of the Students Representative Council, SRC.
The annual routine which was under the auspices of the office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs seeks to spell out the guidelines and other relevant protocols that underpin the establishment and operations of the university. The event which received massive response from the executives has been in place for over two decades.
According to the Dean of Students Affairs, Mr. Michael A.A. Okae Adew, the move which commenced since 1992 as part of enhancing student leadership and management relationship to engender effective discharge of their mandates has been helpful. Mr. Okae was optimistic that the constant engagements with the SRC will aid in sanitizing their activities whiles in office.
In his presentation dubbed “The Role of the SRC in Institutional Development”, Head of Department of Public Administration and Health Services Management at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Justice Nyigmah Bawole, touted the university as the best in the country.
Professor Bawole who was invited by management of the University to acquaint the executives with the rudiments of their function, established the need to prioritize policies and programs of the university ahead of their personal interest. He again implored them to build upon the solid history of the university in protecting and enhancing the brand, Accra Technical University.
Various facilitators at the workshop also took turns to give further explanations on the procedures involved in executing their roles diligently. On his part, Mr. Theophilus Anyanful walked the executives through some clauses of the SRC Constitution and other legal mechanisms that govern the operations of the council.
In a bid to ensure fiscal discipline and value for money transactions, Director of Finance, Mr. Awuah Apraku and the Internal Auditor of the university, Rebecca Baffour explained vividly the regulations of the financial administration and budgeting processes of the university at the first phase of the engagement.
The second phase also witnessed some other presenters including the Acting Registrar, Susan Dillys Kwakye, who outlined the administrative structure, statutes, rules and regulations of the university to the executives. Underscoring the need for attitudinal change, Senior Assistant Registrar, Mrs. Linda A.E. Tormeti urged the executives to eschew attitudes that have the tendency of impeding the smooth execution of their obligations.
Other presenters also touched on series of pertinent matters comprising rules and regulations governing the setting and writing of examinations in the University. Channels for grievances were also eloquently stated by the Head of Examinations of the University, Francis Gyedu.
Bringing the symposium to an end, Head of Public Relations of the University, Fausta Kilian Ganaa, reiterated the need to safeguard the sanctity of the University through professional image branding. She also reminded the executives of the likely damages should they bring the name of the University into disrepute.
Assuring management of effective collaboration, President of the Students Representative Council for the 2017/18 academic year, Prince Addison expressed his outfit’s satisfaction and labeled the exercise as insightful. He also noted that the SRC has inherited some challenges but was confident his administration will work assiduously in the interest of students.
