The Department of Petroleum Engineering of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa has won the 2018 Petro Bowl Quiz Competition for the third time in a row. They defended the title at the competition held at the All Nations University College in Kofuridua. The Petro Bowl quiz competition is the headline event of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Ghana Students Conference where the Student Chapters of the Society come in competition with each other every year.
This victory is a very important milestone in the annals of the Petro Bowl quiz competition because after setting a record as the only University to host and win the competition in 2016, UMaT stands out as the only University to have so far won the title three times in a row in 2016, 2017 and 2018 in Ghana.
A total of six Universities competed for honours at this year’s competition. They included All Nations University College (ANUC), Kofuridua, University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Radford University College, Accra, Regional Maritime University (RMU), Accra, and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani.
After the first, second and third rounds, KNUST, UMaT and ANUC qualified for the finals of the competition. UMaT came out victorious with 265 points followed by KNUST with 170 points and the host institution, ANUC came third with 165 points. UMaT is therefore to keep the trophy for life and also represent Ghana at the SPE International Petro Bowl Competition to be held on 24th September, 2018 in Dallas, Texas, USA.
The UMaT Petrobowl Team was made up of the Faculty Advisor, Dr Richard Amorin, Lecturer-in-Charge of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Mr Eric Amarfio Mensah, the Student Chapter President, Mr Linus Agbeko, the Team Manager, Mr Williams Divine Bakorkor, the Team Captain, Mr Alexander Mensah, and nine other members of the Petro Bowl team represented the University of Mines and Technology at the event.
