The University of Education, Winneba Matriculation Ceremony for Fresh Sandwich Students
A virtual matriculation ceremony for 924 sandwich students for the academic year was hosted by the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on 9th December, at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, Winneba. The 924 students are categorised into 410 undergraduate and 514 graduate students.
The ceremony, which was streamed live on the university website, official YouTube, and Facebook handles to enable students to participate online, conferred membership of the university on the fresh sandwich students after they had fulfilled the academic prerequisites for admission and taken the matriculation oath.
The matriculation oath binds students to abide by all the rules and regulations of the university as enshrined in the students’ handbook and other authorised documents of the university. The oath also requires students to be of good behaviour while pursuing their studies at the university. The event bestowed on matriculants all rights and privileges recognised by the university as well as an obligation on the University Management to seek the welfare of students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, underscored that UEW continues to evolve top-quality support services to sustain the dynamic efforts of providing excellent education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s effort toward rapid economic and social development as well as making its products fully responsive to the realities and exigencies of contemporary Ghana and the West African sub-region.
“Our libraries are well-stocked with a variety of resources for study and reference, including books and online publications. Our libraries collectively hold tens of thousands of books and periodicals. We offer online access to over 40,000 articles, databases, and catalogues from around the world.
“We have widely expanded and provided Wifi access within the university environment which can easily be accessed for studies. The university’s counseling centre is also proud to have highly trained and experienced counsellors on hand to help students with a range of counseling requirements, including relationship, academic, and psychological counseling,” he affirmed.
Prof. Avoke iterated on the university’s commitment to inclusive education in its approach to delivering education. “The Department of Special Education is immediately available to provide numerous support services for students with special needs, such as sign language interpretation. We have a purpose-built ICT laboratory at the Department of Special Education and a Braille Library at the Faculty of Social Science Education to support students with special needs.”

The Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, highlighted the ceremony’s significance in the life of the fresh sandwich students. “It marks the formal and conclusive admission of fresh students to pursue various academic programmes as junior members of full registration status in the university.”
Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah advised the matriculants to study the university’s rules carefully to ensure that they are well-informed on issues pertaining to the UEW environment and more importantly make their stay in the university fruitful.
“You are also entreated to work hard and uphold the good name of the university at all times. It is the responsibility of all of us to help promote the image of our noble institution positively and also shape the destiny of our nation. Our individual and collective efforts in this regard should positively result in bringing the needed transformation in our nation,” she said.
