UENR Holds ITS 7th Matriculation Ceremony For Freshers 2018
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has officially ushered a total of 2,637 students into the University bringing the total population student population to 6,501. Out of those admitted, 2,117 were undergraduate students, of the number, 655 representing 31% were females while 1,462 representing 69% were males.
In the area of postgraduate admissions, a total of 224 applicants were offered admissions into Master of Philosophy and Doctoral Programmes. Of the number, 26 representing 12% were females, while 198 representing 88% were males. A total of 296 were also admitted into the weekend programmes. The Vice-Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Harrison Dapaah disclose this in a speech delivered at the 7th matriculation ceremony of the University held in Sunyani for 2018/2019 academic year.
Prof. Dapaah said the UENR was determined to provide access to University education to many qualified applicants as possible but inadequate academic and residential facilities for staff and student was a hindrance. He indicated that UENR has been working to achieve its mandate through a series of innovative and transformational processes in teaching and learning to produce graduates with unquestionable output in the work environment. Prof. Dapaah said the matriculation was an important ceremony to formerly admit students into the University.
Speaking to the students, the Vice-Chancellor charged them to be of good behavior and ambassadors UENR since they were now part of the University. He stated that as fresh students, it was expected of them to abide by all rules and regulations of the institution and participate in all activities of the university. He charged them to be committed to their studies and justify their selection out of the thousands who could not gain admission to the institution.
He assured both parents and students present that, UENR was the best choice to have been made because the University was a specialized institution, staffed with competent lecturers, scholars and researchers, faculty officers to help equip students with knowledge and integrity. “in this University, you will have opportunities to deepen your education, expand your understanding of society and the world, acquire the requisite knowledge and skills that will define your career aspirations.” He noted.
Prof. Dapaah highlighted some achievements of UENR since its inception in 2012. He espoused that the University received a $1.2 million DANIDA grant in partnership with four other institutions to undertake studies in lake Bosomtwi. The project was under the Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) envisioning that by 2030, the world could end hunger, achieve food security and promote nutrition. In the area of solar energy, the Vice-Chancellor said UENR has been recognized as a leader by the Energy Commission to be the training centre for Solar PV Installers in the design, installation and maintenance of Off-grid and Grid-tied solar PV System.
Advising the students, Prof. Harrison Dapaah exhorted them to aspire higher in terms of exercising their mind urging them to study hard in order to become successful in their academic path. “you need to continually remember that the distance between today’s ceremony and convocation ceremony is quiet wide and it is important that the journey ends successfully.” And asked them to shun deviant behaviours and other vices that would expose them to dangers.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed worry over a number of projects that were at a standstill thereby putting pressure on the few resources available due to increasing number of students. He was optimistic that that the completion of these facilities would help address the challenge of residential and classroom accommodation facing the University. He therefore called on Government and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the University.
