UDS is 25. Hurray!

A journey of thousand miles, they say begins with a step. The passage of a decree (PNDCL 279) in 1992 gave birth to the first Public University to be situated in the northern part of Ghana. It was given a unique mandate to blend academic work with that of the Community for the development of northern Ghana in particular and Ghana as a whole.The University for Development Studies (UDS) started academic work in September 1993, with the admission of forty (40) students. However, 39 students were actually matriculated.

It introduced its flagship programme – the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP) as part of the University’s pedagogy and in fulfillment of its mandate.

In 2012, UDS celebrated twenty (20) years of delivering academic excellence under the theme “UDS: 20 years of Community Development through Higher Education”. The highlights of the celebration included a medical outreach that covered selected communities within the University’s catchment area; a quiz competition; the first edition of the Africa leadership Lectures; Alumni Homecoming and a Dinner and Awards Night, held to honor deserving staff and development partners.

To commemorate the silver jubilee celebrations of the University, a number of events and activities have been lined up to take place from October 2017-October 2018.

This was disclosed by an elated Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G.A. Teye, at the 25 thMatriculation of the University held at the Wa campus and across other campuses on Friday, 13^th October, 2017. The theme for the year-long celebration is “UDS @ 25: Impact on National Development through Practical Higher Education.”

Launching the silver Jubilee Celebration, Prof. Teye noted that UDS was poised for the challenges ahead and committed to continue to position itself as a national asset in the facilitation of life-long learning in order to advance community and national development.“UDS is 25 years old… hurray!!! He exclaimed.
