President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promises Government’s support for University of Mines and Technology (UMaT)

The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) would be supported by Government to carry on with its mandate of training engineers for the mining and related industries. He stressed that UMaT is a University that needs to be supported for the benefit of the whole country.
The President said this in Tarkwa during a durbar of chiefs and people of the Wassa Fiase Traditional Area as part of his three day duty tour of the Western Region. The President affirmed Government’s support after the Western Regional Minister’s address.
President Nana Akufo Addo indicated that UMaT had been tasked to play a key role in the mining sector for the benefit of the West African sub-region and the rest of Africa. The President also emphasised that the Multi-lateral Integrated Mining Programme (MMIP) will be responsible for the promotion of sustainable mining in Ghana. He reiterated that small scale mining is the sole preserve of Ghanaians and that his government is making the necessary commitments to sanitise the sector.
Prior to His Excellency the President’s speech, the Western Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Afriyie attested to the uniqueness of UMaT as, the only University in the world perhaps dedicated solely to Mining and related fields. He indicated that UMaT has a lot of potential especially for the West African sub-region. He therefore called on the President and Government to come and invest in the University because it will deliver on its mandate so that Ghana will benefit.
