Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Organises Job Fair for Final Year Students- 2018
The Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and the Department of Economics, of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have organised a job fair for final year undergraduate students at the Great Hall. The fair provided a forum for companies to share information on employment opportunities with the students.
Reverend Professor Charles Ansah, the Pro Vice Chancellor of KNUST, in his welcome address, stated that increased production is essential for job creation and national development and every nation needs four assets for production which includes labour, capital, land and entrepreneurial skills.
He added that the most important asset is labour, which is the reason the nation spends huge sums of money to train high level workforce to ensure high productivity that would turn around the economy of Ghana.
Professor Ansah stated that, KNUST has played its role in contributing to national development through the various courses offered. He revealed that the recent emphasis on students’ internships and attachments are all designed to train and equip students. According to him, there are instances where jobs will be available but job seekers are not able to secure them due to poor preparation of CVs, and inability of job seekers to properly sell themselves to employers. He therefore stated that job fairs are important to job seekers and employers to overcome challenges.
Professor William Gariba Akanwariwiak, the Dean of Students mentioned that current unemployment crisis of most graduates is because of the huge number of graduates seeking jobs. He added that due to the government’s inability to create jobs for all graduates, the students should take the initiative of creating jobs to help solve the problem of unemployment in Ghana. He said that, being awarded a degree is not what matters but the personality behind the degree is. He pointed out that one of the contributions of the university in terms of job placement is to train the students to work under pressure, since that is one of the core values of every workplace.
Dr. Anthony Osei- Fosu, the Head of Economics Department stated that, in order to maintain high standards at the workplace and also help graduates secure jobs, the companies should educate the students on work management and more importantly how to write CVs. He therefore encouraged the students to make good use of the job fair.
The companies which participated in the job fair are Zoomlion Ghana, HFC Bank currently the Republic Bank, SIC Life Insurance Company, Champion Plus TV, Data Bank, and National Investment Bank.
Ghana Revenue Authority took the students through the new ‘TIN’ registration while the National Service Scheme (NSS) did same with the NSS registration process.
