WORKSHOPS ON NMR AND HPLC-APPLICATION AND BASIC MAINTENANCE

As part of its capacity building program, the Central Laboratory, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi is organising two training workshops on Application of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy in Quality Control Processes and Basic Maintenance of Liquid Chromatography Set Ups at the Central Laboratory, Champion Divine Building, KNUST from 19th – 20th July, 2017.

Scope

Traditionally, the technique of NMR has been used in elucidating the structures of known and hitherto unknown compounds. NMR has played a leading role in natural product research with numerous compounds characterized via this dynamic technique. Aside its classical use, the NMR technique is routinely employed in numerous quality control processes. It is used to authenticate pharmaceutical products and herbal medicines and evaluate the quality of food products and beverages. In this workshop, participants will be taken through the procedures involved in acquiring data in one dimensional (1-D) experiments. Sample preparation and 1-D NMR data acquisition will be the focus of this workshop. In addition, how NMR could be employed in other research activities such as food and pharmaceutical quality control processes amongst others will be discussed.

To ensure efficient use, improve equipment lifespan and guarantee consistent analytical data, various tests should be regularly performed on the HPLC equipment. Participants in this workshop will be taken through Qualification Tests such as system precision tests, flow rate linearity test, compositional accuracy test and wavelength accuracy tests.  In addition, participants will be trained on basic maintenance of the HPLC equipment and troubleshooting some issues that presents themselves on a regular basis.

Who can apply/selection criteria

  • Applicants must necessarily be staff of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
  • The training is targeting Laboratory heads or supervisors, lecturers and senior laboratory/research technicians.
  • Scientists that lead research groups are welcomed to participate in this workshop.

Women candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
