Central University College Library Celebrates 20 Years
The Central University Library is 20 years old and as part of the commemoration has celebrated a Library Week to mark the milestone.
Starting the week long celebration on Wednesday 3rd October, the month of October has been designated to observe the Week every year.
This year’s library week which is to promote the Library’s resources and services as well as encourage effective use of the library is themed, “CU LIBRARY @ 2O: Enhancing Access To Scholarly Information.”
As part of the activities lined up, there was the official launch of the CU Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) which effectively means that CU Library Catalogue is now online and can be accessed from anywhere, anytime, any day with just a click of the button once there is an internet connection.
Special invited guests which included Librarians from sister universities like the University of Ghana, Legon, Methodist University College and the Library of the Parliament of Ghana graced the occasion at the Miotso campus of the Central University.
The Librarian of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Mrs. Pertpetual Dadzie brought fraternal greetings in which she congratulated Central University Library for the progress made so far and also encouraged students and faculty to take full advantage of this expensive investment. She added that not every information found online is authentic and accurate so scholarly journals found on these databases are the right channels for all to use.
According to the In-Charge, Library Services Mrs Florence Yaba Asante, “The Library is also promoting its online databases; these are academic databases that have scholarly peer reviewed articles to help researchers with their academic work. For the whole Library week, we will be out on the verandahs of the various campuses to register as many users of the OPAC and online databases as possible that will be available. The Library staff will also be available to take those who would be interested in how to access the CU e-resources through the process.” She was grateful to God for bringing the Library so far and thanked his colleagues as well as all former staff of the library for their contributions to Library’s progress so far.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bill B. Puplampu in his brief remark congratulated the Library for their good work and commitment to providing relevant scholarly materials for the University community. Quoting from the Gospel of Luke chapter 1, he underscored the importance of keeping accurate records and documenting same for posterity to use. He added that Luke’s accurate account of the life and works of Apostle Paul was of much help to King Theophilus as well as the Christian community even today. He also encouraged students to take full advantage of the Library services and avoid all temptations of plagiarism.
On Friday, 5th of October, there will be a panel discussion at the Graduate School of Business at Christ Temple, Abbosey Okai from 6:00p.m to 7:00p.m on the topic: “The Effective Use of Students Theses, Dissertations and Project Work by Universities and Policy Makers for National Development”.
The Central University currently has 7 desciplinary based libraries on its 4 campuses.
