Ashesi University College

Ashesi University Scholarship Programme

Scholarships at Ashesi
We are committed to granting equal opportunities to students who qualify to attend Ashesi, regardless of their financial resources. Thanks to The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at Ashesi, and grants from generous individuals and organisations, Ashesi is awarding significant need-based financial support to qualified students. Students who win scholarships will be eligible for full or partial financial support to cover their tuition fees, text books, housing, and meals. Do note that scholarships are awarded to students prior to their enrolment into Ashesi. We only offer highly limited financial aid to students already enrolled.

Who can apply for a scholarship at Ashesi?
Typically, scholarships are awarded to students from low income and middle income families. Any family that cannot afford the full fees should complete a financial aid application form and submit it with their admissions application. The Scholarship Committee will determine the amount of your award on the basis of demonstrated need and the strength of your application. You cannot apply for a scholarship after you have been admitted.

What is Ashesi’s relationship with The MasterCard Foundation?
Through a funding partnership with The MasterCard Foundation in Canada, Ashesi has been able to expand its existing scholarship programme. This category of scholarship covers not only the full tuition, but also includes housing, meals on campus, a free laptop, spending money and annual trips home for international students after the second year.

How are scholarship decisions made?
The selection process begins by determining whether a student qualifies to be admitted into Ashesi, based on each applicant’s overall profile. Applicants are then evaluated on the basis of documented financial need; at this stage, a thorough assessment is made of all applicant information gathered by the Scholarship Committee.

Based on the financial aid request, applicants are placed into one of three categories: High Need, Medium Need or Low Need. For each category of aid, there is a set amount of funding Ashesi can award.

Students in each category are ranked based on the competitiveness of their admissions application. Students who receive scholarships typically demonstrate that they would be;
a. otherwise unable to afford to attend Ashesi.
b. able to successfully complete academic work at Ashesi.
c. active contributors to campus life and culture.

Will an application for a scholarship affect the decision to offer me admission to Ashesi?
No. The decision to make an offer of admission is done independently of scholarship decisions. Do note however, that both the admissions and scholarships awards are highly competitive.

When will I know whether I have been awarded a scholarship?
The admissions office will give you a date you can expect to hear back from Ashesi, based on the date you applied. You will receive both your admission and scholarship decision at the same time.

Will my scholarship be renewed every year?
As long as you and your family can continue to demonstrate financial need, you can expect that your scholarship award will be renewed annually. The Scholarship Committee meets annually to assess the financial status of each scholar’s family. You may be asked to submit updated bank statements, pay slips and other supporting documents to verify your family’s financial standing.
