Asanko Gold Mining Company Limited Donates Petrology Microscopes to UMaT

Asanko Gold Mining Company Limited has donated five Petrology Microscopes to the Department of Geological Engineering of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa. At a short ceremony to present the equipment to the University, the Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Mr Frederick Attakumah, indicated that, it was a privilege to be donating such important equipment to the University because according to him they were making the donation because UMaT was producing world class graduates who were making them proud. He further said that the UMaT brand was very strong and so the Company would continue to engage the University since they have a vested interest in the production of the best graduates for the extractive industry.  He added that they would continue to build this relationship with the University into the future because it was in their own interest to do so.

He said that when the request was received from the Vice Chancellor to help equip the Petrology Laboratory, they found it wise to extend a hand of support with the donation of 5 Petrology Microscopes worth one hundred and twenty thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢120,000.00). Mr Attakumah was hopeful that the donation of the Microscopes would enable the University to provide effective training for students in the Department of Geological Engineering.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma, responding, thanked Mr Attakumah for the gesture and assured him that the equipment would be used to benefit not only students in the Department of Geological Engineering but also students from the Department of Minerals Engineering. He emphasised that the donation of the equipment will enhance the desire of the University to train the students with practical skills for the mining and allied industries.

Mr Attakumah was given a tour of the new Environmental Monitoring Laboratory currently being set up. He was shown some of the equipment that could test samples and how Mining Companies could benefit from the resources at the laboratory.  He expressed satisfaction about the state of the art equipment in the Laboratory and assured Management that his Company would certainly patronise the services of the Laboratory when it starts operations.

Present at the ceremony were Prof V. A. Temeng, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Mr A. K. Doku, the Registrar of UMaT, Dr G. M. Tetteh, a Lecturer in the Department of Geological Engineering and Mr Paul Yeboah, the University Relations Officer.
