Winner of College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) on the University of Education Winneba (UEW) Council

DR ADU-GYAMFI WINS COLTEK REPRESENTATION ON UEW COUNCIL ELECTION

The Head of Department of Information Technology Education (ITE), Dr. Samuel Adu-Gyamfi is the newly elected representative of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) on the University of Education Winneba (UEW) Council. He prevailed in a keenly contested election for that position, amassing 50 votes representing 45.5 per cent of the total 110 valid votes cast in last Monday, February 26, 2018 elections organised by the College. His opponents, Messrs Yarhands Dissou Arthur, Lecturer, Chairman COLTEK UTAG and Mr. Charles Baba Campion, Senior Assistant Registrar, Head of Department, Academic Affairs polled 31 votes representing 28.19 per cent and 29 votes representing 26.36 per cent respectively. With his election, Dr Adu-Gyamfi would serve two-year tenure on the Council and would have yet another opportunity to contest for additional two-year tenure. He succeeds the Dean of the Faculty of Technology Education (FTE) Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual who served a total of four years on the Council as the representative of COLTEK.

Last Monday’s election saw an impressive turn-out of about 93.33 percent of all eligible voters casting their ballots in an election in which contestants had left no stone unturned in their campaigns. Every available space on the campus saw the display of the candidates’ posters, social media platforms were often bombarded with campaign messages, eligible voters received regular personal visits and follow-up text messages to keep the candidates in the sights and mind. Central to most of the messages circulated was the promise of mature, experience and competent leadership. Eventually, Dr Adu-Gyamfi’s messages that had additional spices of unity, inclusiveness and care-giving appeared to have resonated quite well with voters as they poured out in their numbers to vote him into victory. Even in victory, Dr. Adu- Gyamfi’s calm and gentle demeanor was evident. He was very humble and gracious as he heartily shook hands and embraced the losing candidates soon after the Senior Assistant Registrar and Acting College Registrar of COLTEK, Mr. Michael Kofi Twum-Ampomah declared him winner of the elections. He was full of thanks, first, to the Lord and then to all voters and organisers of the elections for ensuring an incident-free election when he spoke to this reporter after he was declared winner.

However, he was quick to concede that the victory presented a huge challenge to him, a responsibility that he could not afford to fail. “I am aware that there is so much to do for this campus and UEW, as a Council member. I am ready. I will work closely with everybody on this campus and ensure that there is timely and smooth communication flow – listening to our concerns as a campus and bringing responses from our Council meetings’, he said. Dr Adu-Gyamfi, a Quinquagenarian, has a PhD in Information Technology from the University of Aalborg, Denmark since 2014, MA Information and Communication Technology and Education, University of Leeds, United Kingdom, 2005 and B.Ed Secretarial/Management Education from the University of Education, Winneba, 1999. He has worked with the UEW since 2006 as a lecturer and has held several administrative positions including serving as HOD for the ITE Department for a number of years; Academic Board Representative: Housing Committee; Departmental Examinations Officer; Chief Examiner, Information and Communication Technology and Academic Counselor.

He has several journal articles, sextuple published books and attended a number of local and international conferences where he presented papers. He also belongs to several professional and academic/scientific associations including UTAG, Danish Association of Science and Technology Studies (DASTS), Society for information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE), Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) and Association for Learning Technology (ALT).
