UEW Management Strives to Contain Spread of Covid-19

Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is making great efforts to contain the spread of the novel Coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) should students be asked to return to campus for academic work.

This was revealed by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Pro-VC), Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang during a disinfection exercise initiated by Zoomlion Ghana and Citi TV at the University.  Zoomlion Ghana and Citi TV with support from the Government of Ghana have been embarking on disinfection exercises in universities in the country as part of measures to contain the spread of the global disease, COVID-19. The Covid-19 disinfection team visited UEW on Thursday, 16th April, 2020 to fumigate lecture halls, Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS) Block and walkways on all three campuses of the University at the Winneba Campus.

Addressing the media during the exercise, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang expressed Management’s readiness to welcome students back on campus immediately the virus is controlled. According to him, Management had put in place a lot of stringent measures to protect staff and students from the virus.

“Since the announcement by the President that schools should close down, we have rolled out a lot of things. First, we have ensured that critical and emergency staff only come to the office. Second, we have fixed on all the walls hand sanitizer equipment fully stocked and also provided partial personal protective equipment such as nose masks and hand gloves. Also, the University Clinic in partnership with the campus radio, Windy Bay 98.3 MHz Fm is rolling out special and sensitisation programme on the pandemic for the community,” he said.

He indicated that the exercise was vital in breeding confidence and assurance in the campus environment thereby reducing anxiety and panic in people.

“Since this exercise has been done, it means that the anxiety, the fear and panic that comes with waking up every morning and not knowing what will happen on campus will reduce,” the Pro-VC averred.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor entreated staff, the Effutu community and the public in general to adhere to laid down precautionary measures by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Government of Ghana.

The Leader of the disinfection team, Mr. Gideon Sogbey stated that, the purpose of the exercise was to try as much as possible to contain the spread of the covid-19 especially within the public areas. He indicated that his team consisted of 58 sprayers along with one thermal fogger and two fogger machines mounted on pick-ups.

The University is currently running its academic programmes for the semester online through its Learning Management Systems (LMS) as a result of the closure of universities as announced by His Excellency, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo to fight the Covid-19pandemic.
